In my advocacy work in ERGs over the last few years, I've been struck by what can be achieved when you bring together talented, passionate, like-minded women to support other women through volunteering. What I love about this story is the reminder that we have, within corporate workplaces, the skills many non-profits need to turbocharge their ability to help people. In this month's article for The Drum (link in comments) I looked at 'Cause Marketing'. Specifically, how can you create a fitting, equitable relationship between your brand, a non-profit and your mutual audiences? I looked at the good - Starbucks & the transgender charity Mermaids The bad - Brewdog cackhandedly piggybacking the gender inequality debate And the innovative - the recent collaboration between our newly released game 'Wildmender' and the Rainforest Alliance. I also stick the boot into Russell Brand because, let's face it, he deserves it. TL;DR - it's not easy to set up or get the balance absolutely right with a cause marketing partnership but done well, it's a win/ win/ win for all parties. Better Grants Start with Better Decisions It's not the dog's fault. The one that starts barking at 3 a.m. and doesn't stop. The owners left it outside. But still, I blamed that dog for invading my dreams with its piercing, rhythmic cry. For years, I blamed convoluted grant applications for driving grant writers barking mad. Until I woke up—gradually through networking, workshops, reading, and learning. Then I realized that the lack of transparency and outmoded applications weren't the most damaging aspects of the grant-seeking process. The lack of grant funding for marginalized groups, like people of color and LGBTQ organizations, is far more concerning. According to reports, only 1.8% of philanthropic giving goes to Black-led organizations, and a mere 0.28% goes to the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, many funders refuse to provide general operating grants, demanding new programs for every grant cycle. How often have you heard, "We don't fund people, only programs"? As if programs magically materialize without people behind them. Naming these issues feels overwhelming or cathartic when commiserating with grant pros. But that's just the start of making things better. On the Fundraising HayDay Podcast, co-host Amanda Day and I are dedicated to making space for awareness and connection with grant writers who want change and groups working toward it. More than Grant Writers, #CrappyFundingPractices, and GrantAdvisor are doing great work in these areas.
