Data, it is often said, is the currency of the future. The #future will increasingly be shaped by decisions we make using online data and by the #ArtificialIntelligence machines that feed on that data. If the #data can’t be trusted, or we have no confidence in our ability to analyse it, we’ll never hold #AI to account or produce innovation that improves life on earth. This should be a matter of deep concern. While most of us rely on #digitaldata to work, rest, relate and play, we are functionally illiterate when it comes to reading, understanding and interpreting it. We urgently need to equip ourselves and emerging generations with enhanced #skills to deal with all things digital, in a way that enhances our humanity. But how? G7 digital ministers issue communiqué on AI and tech By Gian Volpicelli | 03/15/2024 02:10 PM EDT BRUSSELS — Digital ministers from G7 countries committed Friday to finding ways to monitor compliance with the so-called Hiroshima Process voluntary code for artificial intelligence. In a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day ministerial meeting on industry and digital, G7 officials in Trento, Italy, said they would devise “tools and mechanisms” to make sure that companies committing to the nonbinding code of conduct — bequeathed to the current Italian presidency by Japan — are held accountable. The code includes pledges for ethical AI development, transparency and risk mitigation, including watermarking AI-generated media. The statement also proposes promoting the code of conduct and its underlying principles to other countries, including developing and emerging economies. The more industry-focused section of the document underlines the need to encourage AI technology adoption among micro-, small and medium-sized businesses. The document also highlights the importance of maintaining competition in the white-hot AI sector, adding that the matter would be further discussed at another G7 summit on digital competition, to be held in Rome later this year.
