The senior leaders of the DoD have been fond of pointedly asking, “How are LLMs going to help us do warfighting?”… The simple answer is LLMs are a foundational technology to allowing and enabling the advanced training and operation of robotics. Rather you want to point to any number of the forms of human workload offset or replacement, robotics will make a major impact in the years to come. This video of a recent presentation done by Nvidia researchers should hopefully open people’s eyes to what’s coming, and what’s possible even now. LLMs are the component enabling technology that allows for type 2 thinking for robotics, and the overall robot performance will continue to scale with advances in both chips and models. In 5-10 years we’ll see the first widespread deployment of advanced robotics in the world. The question becomes what does the path from here to there look like? Ringbot: A ROBOT THAT WALKS ON A ROUND BODY, INSPIRED BY THE STARWARS UNIVERSE. Developed by KIMLAB (Kinetic Intelligent Machine LAB), this robot is designed to offer versatile movement. Within its capabilities, the Ringbot has both stability and rolling capability by replacing the traction and pressure values of a traditional single-wheeled vehicle with pads mounted on compact propulsion modules. Ringbot has two independent driving modules and these modules are included in the content. Thanks to these modules, the speed of the robot can be controlled and regulated. It also has the ability to recover and change direction after falls. Working on an ambitious project: a humanoid robot with 19 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) in its arms and legs! Currently, the robot is still in progress and not yet stable enough to walk. Despite these challenges, this project is an incredible learning experience in biomechanics and advanced robotics. Each joint is powered by precise servo motors, and I'm continuously tweaking the system to achieve smooth and coordinated movements. The journey of building this humanoid robot has deepened my understanding of robotic motion and control systems. I'm excited to keep refining and stabilizing it, with the ultimate goal of achieving autonomous walking. Is very positive to see that global average robot density has hit an all-time high, at 151 robots per 10,000 employees, with a total of 3.9 million operational robots in 2022. But am quite suprised to see Hong Kong in the Top10, above Taiwan, Switzerland, and the US. Especially when you consider the huge deindustrialisation over the past 40 years. I wonder if these are actually located in Hong Kong, or just sold to Hong Kong registered companies, but are actually sited in the mainland. Be nice to see the raw data from the International Federation of Robotics regarding these statistics. As in the same year, around 74,478 people were employed in the manufacturing industry, which would indicate there are >2,331 robots, and that is if only that sector is counted, otherwise there could be even more with the logistics, education, and service sectors.
