Probably the biggest 'take-away' from what is happening at Chipotle Mexican Grill is that competitive advantage is fleeting. It was just not that long ago that the 'pundits' were blasting away at the chain for their problems and inability to grow! UGH!! All strategy has a time element to it. Anytime one talks about how well or badly an organization is doing, they should frame it with the timing. It is a combination of the efforts of a leadership team, board, employees who understand the 'WHY WE EXIST' and the backing of that 'WHY' with real resources and action. McDonald's roared from about 2003 to 2010... no one is singing their praises right now. Those who have consistently catered to the 'low price' drumbeat for success simply do not understand competitive advantage. Any fool organization can be the low price leader. It takes skill to be the 'low cost' leader and there is only ONE LOW COST leader in any marketplace. The rest are wannabees who increasingly get crushed by margins. Leadership: "So PR team, we have a release we want to get out that lets people know that we are now able to price gauge them during high traffic times when people tend to want to eat. OK, just lead with the part about the fancy new menu screens and no one will notice." Me to leadership before I sent any release out: "What is the worst way anyone can interpret this, and if that happen's what is our response."
