German discount supermarket chain PENNY Deutschland ran a week-long experiment where nine food items - including wiener sausages, cheese and yoghurt - were priced based on their ‘true cost’ to people’s health and the environment. Prices rose for Wiener sausages (from €3.19 to €6.01), mozzarella (74% to €1.55) and fruit yoghurt (31% to €1.56). The awareness campaign is in partnership with academics from the Nuremberg Institute of Technology and Universität Greifswald, triggered by the belief that supermarket prices do not reflect true environmental or health costs. The experiment was limited to a small range of products due to a lack of scientific groundwork but has initiated discussions around pricing groceries fairly. Last weekend, our CEO, Emily Ruttan, had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion at the Alberta Bottle Depot Association (ABDA) Conference. She discussed the role of Empties to WINN as a social enterprise, highlighting its 18 years of continuous operation and its status as the leading non-profit beverage container collection program in the region ♻️. The proceeds generated by ETW provide essential support to Winnifred Stewart, an organization dedicated to offering Home Services, Community Program support, and Employment Services for adults with diverse abilities. The panel discussion was hosted by Jerry Roczkowsky, the President of ABDA, and other guests who joined the panel discussion included: - Serena King, Executive Director of Cosmos, and Director on the ABDA Board of Directors . - Brenda Smith, Director of Business Services at Recycle Plus, a social enterprise owned by Signature Support, and a Director on the ABDA Board of Directors. Social enterprises hold a significant position in the Not-for-Profit sector, the bottle depot landscape, and the province. There are 11 not-for-profit depots in the province, collectively responsible for 10 percent of the total volume. Winnifred Stewart, on the other hand, collects a remarkable 7 million containers annually. Empties to WINN has recently initiated the acceptance of Request for Proposals from potential Bottle Depot partners. These depots seeking collaboration must possess a current permit issued by the Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB). Reflecting on the past year! **Real ale trails events landed in 6 counties and collaborated with 30 pubs, engaging with 3000 people, making a positive impact on the local economy. One major realisation was how difficult it was for local breweries to get their ales into pubs now. We are at serious risk of offering a monotonous drinking experience across the country if something doesn’t change as where will breweries sell there ales if not in the local boozers? Navigating the rising operational costs and limited consumer spending was last years constant challenge for me. Balancing these factors while projecting next year's sales is a delicate dance, fingers crossed for a smoother ride ahead. Beyond events I'm proud to have collaborated with tourism industry, manufacturing, county councils, leadership coaching, charities, and various companies, assisting them with marketing and sales efforts. David Laity has a story, and it's damn good. Well, it's Goodwill Wine... A social enterprise, who blasted through the $500,000 donated to charity milestone, all through sales of their premium wine. BAM!! Black Saturday will be remembered as one of the most tragic days in Victoria's history. But it should also be remembered as the day the David was forced to think about his life, his purpose, and what was important to him. Almost everything he owned was destroyed, and he was forced to start again. Instead of using the money he received from charity to buy essentials, it was put into a business designed to give back to the charities which helped him get back on his feet. And so, Goodwill Wine was born. In this episode, David talks about how he started and grew the company (including living in the freezing cold warehouse to save money) and how just by drinking premium wine, you can do a whole lot of GOOD!! This is our kind of story. I know your thinking about wine now... This part is the best. Imagine a really great wine has the wrong colour cap put on it, and the winery can't sell it. Or it's bottled but they ran out of labels, and it's just sitting in the back of the winery gathering dust. These wines may sell for $60 on the shelf, but are labelled/relabelled as Goodwill wine, and sell for $25 on the Goodwill website.
