Excited to share that a recent post of mine was picked up by BusinessWorld as a feature! "The raison d ‘etre of the streaming platforms is subscribers, and not necessarily specific viewing, although one possible future is TVOD. Ergo, the cost perspective of the platforms depends upon their objectives, their creative strategy, and also their size. That is a big reason for the superstar culture going down, and we are seeing a larger number of films and shows which are of relatively low cost, with sharp writing and edgy film making. Interestingly, it is opening up new consumers, and new languages, as viewers are becoming language agnostic. So , virtually all future decision making will telescope towards building the best creative output at lowest cost , which then puts the writers , producers , directors in limelight to drive creative and commercial success of the product . This needs compensation and incentive structures to be aligned to the delivery, and the parameters have to be templated for transparency. The industry may have to look at the sports Industry for inspiration where the base product differentiates between superstars and the hoi polloi, but the success and its spoils are shared equitably with everybody , and not just stars." My wish and opinion: In addition to paying fair wages, I would love to see Hollywood studios make >more<, smaller bets, as VC firms do with their portfolios, instead of placing so many eggs in the tent pole basket. The appetite for original content (Barbie, Sound of Freedom, Oppenheimer, Theater Camp...) has been high this summer, representing, I think, audiences wanting a greater diversity of high-interest content. And, emerging talent will get a chance. #entertainmentindustry #movies #entertainment #writersstrike #actorsstrike https://lnkd.in/gTsyEJHS

🔍 Independent Filmmakers: Mastering the Art of Resourcefulness 🎥 As an indie filmmaker, you're the heart, soul, and often the entire circulatory system of your projects. Here's how to keep the creativity flowing without the big studio backing: 1. Resource Allocation: Every dollar counts. Spend where it impacts the screen the most and cut corners creatively where you can. 2. DIY Solutions: Embrace the indie spirit. From homemade rigs to inventive set designs, your ingenuity is your greatest asset. 3. Collaborative Networks: Build a community of fellow indie creators. Share resources, skills, and support to lift each other's projects. 4. Digital Tools: Utilize free or low-cost software to manage your production, from scripting to editing. 5. Guerrilla Marketing: When it comes to promotion, think outside the box. Social media is your friend, and so are grassroots methods like community screenings. 6. Continuous Learning: The indie scene is ever-evolving. Stay informed about new techniques, gear, and distribution platforms. 7. Passion Over Perfection: Your vision and voice matter more than flawless production values. Tell the stories that resonate with you, and they will resonate with others. Keep pushing the boundaries, indie filmmakers. Your unique perspective is what cinema needs! 🌟 #IndieFilm #FilmmakingLife #ResourcefulCinema #trigr

Hollywood's biggest studios have made an offer to striking Hollywood writers public for the first time. Late Tuesday, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which bargains on behalf of studios including Warner Bros., Disney, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and NBCUniversal, released the terms of its proposal, which the Writers Guild of America (WGA) denied in a face-to-face meeting with studio executives earlier that day. By releasing the details of the counterproposal, the AMPTP is hoping the package will sway members and encourage the guild to accept the deal. According to the AMPTP, the contract is "a comprehensive package which addresses all of the issues the Guild has identified as its highest priorities," including higher compensation, increases to streaming residuals, transparency around viewership data, a guaranteed minimum length of employment, and further protections surrounding the use of artificial intelligence. I break down the latest on Yahoo Finance... #strike #hollywoodstrike #writersstrike #WGA #studios #businessnews #finance #negotiations #AMPTP #actorsstrike

Every handful of years I’ll look at my Dropbox files and say “I should reorganize these.” Sometimes it’s valid, most times it’s resistance (pro tip: read “The War of Art), but going through this exercise yesterday brought me across a film I made in 2013 called “Tall Grass.” I made it for the area's first-ever 24-hour Film Festival, which was met with some resistance. Before I explain that, I should share the motivation for doing the work to host and participate in this film festival: inspiring the area’s filmmaker and storyteller community. You see, at the time Iowa had recently lost filming-related tax benefits because a very bad egg took advantage of the system and caused a ripple effect that effectively halted filming in Iowa. So I wanted to do something that showed people there were talented storytellers and filmmakers in Iowa, and do so in a forward-thinking way. This is where the resistance came in. If you aren’t familiar with the 24-hr format, they usually have rules to inspire creative consistency throughout the team's stories. For example: • Must have _____ prop • Must have _____ line I added a third rule many didn't like: you had to film it on a mobile device. It was 2013. A lot of “serious” filmmakers turned their noses up at it and refused to participate because of it. But in doing so, they missed the point. Was I carrying around an iPhone 5 at the time? Yes Was that enough to make “serious” stories? Debatable Does that matter? Not in the slightest What mattered here was the opportunity to do something new. To be part of the rebirth of a community, and establish yourself as one of the original members of the new/refreshed tribe. That’s what most people don’t get about community. It’s not always about you. It’s about what you can do together, and by doing so – genuinely focusing on others – the things that are about you tend to happen too. But the film festival was still a success. The 24-Hour Film Festival ended up with ten teams. Nine of them competed in the competition, and my film (which I felt shouldn’t compete since I was the host). And we had over 100 people attend the screening. It was a blast. I wish those who didn’t want to attend because it was “on a phone” could’ve seen what we did in those 24 hours. It was special. Hosting this film festival also inspired me to create a filmmaker's meetup later that year. It was there I met someone who would become one of my best friends, and we would go on to coauthor a novel together. Never underestimate the value and power and blessings of community. Now I live in Salt Lake City, and I’ve heard there are storytellers here who feel like they don’t have a community (bet you know where this is going). This Friday I’m cohosting the first-ever Story Craft meetup! It’s a storyteller community, and one I hope will lead to new friendships, connections, and collaborations. If you’re in the SLC area and want to attend, RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gSsRdq2J

In this GDC 2023 video, now on YouTube, hear how Sam Barlow and Half Mermaid conceived and then designed the multi-dimensional, decade-spanning series of interconnected Interactive Movies, IMMORTALITY. Learn about the design processes and prototypes that allowed the team to explore the game ideas and structure. How the ambitious and layered story was outlined and researched, and how the team collaborated with notable screenwriters to tap into authenticity. How game design learning translates into the production and directing of the three movies worth of footage. Finally, what learnings other teams can take from this ambitious and boundary pushing title to apply to their own genres and game ideas. https://bit.ly/3QraIAa

How I get high from what #neuralnetworks do in #videoproduction! An enthusiast shot a whole clip for the track Baddadan from Chase & Status! Just imagine: it took only three hours to work. First, he generated 200 frames in Midjourney with a precise prompt, and then animated them in #Gen2 even without requests. It remains to transfer the gifs to the video editor, add music and put everything together. I'll leave a link to the guide and prompt for #Midjourney in the comments if you want to repeat this. A clear example that a team, cameras and light are no longer needed to create a video! And a clear example of how the industry is changing before our eyes, absorbing the most interesting and new. Stay tuned!
