Here is a previous reply I made to a similar post: An amazing achievement, though it should be made clear that these providers are highly selective. This means the ability of its pupils on entry to the sixth form is exceptionally high to begin with, so their achievement is not directly comparable to other 6th forms who may also be doing fantastic work with their cohorts. This important detail is being missed. In order to study A Levels, students need a minimum of 62 points from their best 8 GCSEs, which must include the EBacc subjects, (vocational courses e.g., BTEC courses, subjects without a substantial written examination and community languages will not be included in the best 8). Students must also have at least a GCSE grade 7 in English Language and Mathematics to study A levels. Individual subject entry requirements are typically grade 8-9. I’m not sure what the oversubscribtion criteria is here, but there is a similar 6th form that takes the pupils with the highest grades if the course is oversubscribed. This could mean the actual entry criteria is more like a 9. I do not doubt that fantastic work is being done, how could I? But context is important. It’s not the same entry criteria as the college down the road.
Great to see that 95% of students from NCS, ICS (Islington) and HCS (Hackney) have received offers from Russell Group Universities. HCS and ICS are modelled on the NCS, and it’s great that Newham’s success is being replicated in other areas of London. More students should benefit from an NCS style education & City of London Academies Trust is helping facilitate this. These three academic institutions tilt the balance in our students’ favour by ensuring there’s sky high expectations, an emphasis on hard work, broad enrichment and super curricular opportunities, a comprehensive UK/US University preparation programme, dedicated NCS professional schools to support career ambitions, outstanding teaching and a ‘why not our students’ mentality from all staff.

Groundbreaking work by #DCU on reimagining undergraduate education. Great to hear from Simon Harris on the important topic of how education needs to be agile and train for skills that can adapt for careers that don’t even exist yet. #dcufuturesconf

It’s both incredibly short-sighted, a disservice to the community, and more than likely—a game of political opportunism when liberal arts colleges come under attack—even worse so when they close. Regardless of your personal politics, there’s nothing “liberal” about liberal arts—no more so than now in 2024 versus 1844. We simply can’t pivot society overnight to STEM-only colleges and/or corporate careers, nor can or should we cherry pick institutions to recruit and/or hire from. We need employees and community members who can effectively communicate in writing and verbally, have top-notch presentation skills, pick up context clues by just reading an email or memo, and we need those who can make sense of the important work being done in the STEM field, but explained in a way the rest of us can “get it” and understand. All of that is liberal arts education, so respectfully, don’t ask for people who can communicate effectively if you only want STEM candidates—it simply doesn’t work that way. As a product of a liberal arts education, someone who was/is very familiar with what BSC brought to the Birmingham community, and a neurodivergent learner myself, the ongoing losses of liberal arts institutions is disheartening. The state of Alabama and the city of Birmingham lost a great resource in a region where there aren’t many. Don’t think it can’t happen elsewhere, folks. #LiberalArtsMatter
Who are my ride or die liberal arts people? This one hit hard. CTCL schools are core. And now one of the bastions of critical thinking in Alabama is gone. Half of my family is from Birmingham. It’s about students always— find us a home in your distress. 💔

This #ThrowbackThursday, CAS features an article from January 2022 that highlights the involvement of the organization in creation of standards and resources for higher education professionals. The CAS framework is broken down into standards and guidelines. In the article, CAS standards are described as "requirements for all quality programs, can be achieved by everyone, and use the verb “must.”" Read the full article posted by the National Association of College Stores Foundation: https://ow.ly/i5nA50Q27XA #highereducation #collegestores #casstandards #studentaffairs #studentlife #studentsuccess #
