Calling all fellow "learn it all" enthusiasts! I am trying a new conference next week - #CUPA-HR. Venturing into unknown territory can evoke apprehension and trepidation. Instead, I am focusing on three #curiosity strategies that highlight the adventure and possibility in this opportunity for years to come. The CUPA-HR conference may be new for me, but human resources and management are not. During my doctoral program, I studied HRM (University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business), earned a cognate in it, and even focused my dissertation on organizational change. In my work, I use a people-first approach. At student affairs conferences, I often present on topics such learning organizations, transformative change, storytelling, assessment, staff development, etc. The focus of CUPA, on topics like workforce engagement, talent management, thriving cultures, ethos and practices for organizational excellence, and use of data as a strategic asset are just some of the topics that speak to me and light me up! The unknowns in this adventure, essentially lots to learn about the actual conference, are equally paired with excitement and anticipation. Maybe youโve experienced similar feelings at some point about something new(ish) to you? Hereโs what Iโm thinking - my boundless curiosity approach: 1) Embrace a "learn it all" mindset. 2) Energize myself by meeting new colleagues (Fun fact: "Socializes a lot with others" was a frequent note on my childhood report cards! Area of strength!)! 3) Craft my list of collaborators and focus areas as I navigate the event. Choosing my mindset, remembering my energy, and building a take-away list should ensure not only a great experience but also a lasting impact in my work for years to come. As part of Everest Groupโs research on skills and internal marketplaces, we recently published a report titled โInternal Talent Mobility: Driving adoption and culture change in organizations through coaching and technologyโ. Internal mobility and AI-talent marketplaces have increased in importance owing to talent scarcity, improved focus on employee development, and employees wanting to have more control over their career arcs. However, in our conversations with HR and business leaders, we see internal talent mobility programs failing due to multiple reasons including reluctance from managers and hesitance from employees. Here are my 5 learnings why you should still invest in these events. ๐๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐น ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: โ Invite as many attendees regardless the quality. โ Measure success based on total sum of attendees. โ Misuse all keynotes slots to promote your company. ๐ ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐น ๐จ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฏ๐๐ซ๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ: โ Have a clear strategy to drive only ICP to your event. โ See events as a touch point rather than single event. โ Add value in keynotes through experts & customers.
