In a refreshingly honest TED talk titled "How to Govern AI", Helen Toner, an AI policy researcher and former board member of OpenAI, illuminated a critical yet often unspoken truth about artificial intelligence and the general race to develop an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): No one truly understands it, not even the experts. This revelation might unsettle some, but to me, it's a call to action and an invitation for all—experts and laypersons alike—to engage actively in shaping the trajectory of AI. Her talk isn't just a reflection on AI's complexities; it’s a roadmap for our collective future. Unlike traditional technologies where creators hold a deep understanding of the mechanics and outcomes, AI’s inner workings are often a black box—even to those who build it. This black box usually represents the AI’s neural network which consists of billions of connected nodes (or "neurons") that process information by breaking it down into tiny bits and making sense of it based on patterns learned over time. Like our ongoing study of the human brain, a deep understanding of AI’s true nature therefore also requires continuous study and exploration. Given the rapid integration of AI in various aspects of our lives, waiting for complete understanding isn’t an option. We must take a proactive approach to AI governance, where adaptability and inclusivity play crucial roles. I endorse Helen’s advocacy for a governance model that is not intimidated by the technology itself or the conglomerates that develop it. AI governance should not be left solely to those who build it. Echoing the democratic ethos that has guided technological adoption in the past, there is a strong need for public participation in AI governance and a societal approach where everyone has a voice in how AI is developed and utilized. This participatory approach is vital not only for fairness but also for the practicality of implementing effective governance frameworks. It reflects a shift from a purely regulatory focus to one of resilience and adaptability—qualities essential for navigating the unpredictable nature of AI development. Helen Toner’s TED talk serves as a clarion call to all stakeholders in AI: to ENGAGE, DELIBERATE, and PARTICIPATE in shaping a technology that is as mysterious as it is transformative. We need ongoing investment in AI measurement and transparency and policies that demand greater disclosure from AI developers and the implementation of systems that can respond dynamically to AI’s evolution. The path forward is uncertain, but it is one that we must tread together, making informed decisions that consider both the immense potential and the profound challenges of artificial intelligence. We can harness AI’s capabilities while ensuring it serves the greater good. #AIgovernance #ArtificialIntelligence #TechEthics #FutureOfAI #HelenToner #TedTalk https://lnkd.in/grsHR5rg,

Education for an AI world ~ Keynote speaker ~ AI Strategy and policy ~ Curriculum Development ~ Professional Dev. ~ Educational Gaming ~ Author
I have long been dubious of the Silicon Valley ethos that often seems naively utopian and inhumane. Having spent a long time in AI development, I am now at the point where I won't even expose my ideas for improving AI. As tiny as my contribution would be, I don't want to contribute to the acceleration. People and institutions need time to catch up. Judy Estrin does a great job in this article laying out the issues. #ai #innovation #futureofai
Really appreciate the points raised by the very thoughtful Judy Estrin in this essay for TIME. No one calls Judy a Luddite -- and yet she raises some very pointed questions about where AI is headed. #ai #innovation
