WSJ 4/20 article and today’s War on Rocks article highlight a generational opportunity to attract CompSci grads to cyber force positions We have an oversupply of computer science grads and an under supply of cyber force. Is there an opportunity here to take advantage of under employment of TENS OF THOUSANDS of recruits to a new force structure? The excess pipeline will exist for 4 years max until parents force kids into the “ing” major (engineering, accounting, nursing etc). Let’s not blow this once in a generation opportunity. Is anyone in DoD leadership willing to be Col. John Boyd (OODA, F16 mafia) for a new Cyber Force? Asking for a friend… https://lnkd.in/gKBQW6VP

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently unveiled the new GARD program designed to counteract adversaries who try to “trick” America’s AI-enabled defense systems. Short for ‘Guaranteeing AI Robustness against Deception,’ the set of technologies and strategies should help America’s military forces improve AI-enhanced systems like advanced targeting systems. That’s because these systems can, in some cases, be deceived by low-tech approaches that enemies use to trick into thinking their forces or vehicles are allies or even make those same systems believe a friendly vehicle is actually an enemy target.

Great to see the Air Force is doing this. I was making this case almost ten years ago in the beltway one day to AF A1 and I think most people in the room thought I was way off. The Air Force would never go back to warrant officers and don't need to. My point as a commander was, "where in the rank structure are the seasoned technical professionals?" It doesn't exist formally. We have them in the Air National Guard because we let our NCOs and Senior NCOs continue to learn and touch the equipment, the code, the tools, always staying "rated" in a way. On active duty, NCOs and Senior NCOs have to administrate and manage, and aren't allowed to touch the equipment, code, tools. Will be reprimanded for doing so in some cases in what was supposed to be a plug and play to make it green world. It's not the Company Grade Officers (CGO), Captain and below. They don't have years and years of experience. Not the Field Grade Officers (FGO), Major and above because they do have to lead, manage and administrate all day. So who? The contractors? The civilians? That's not the military rank structure. During my FGO years I had the honor of working with some amazing warrant officers in the Army and Navy who knew their technology, their systems inside out, up and down. The go to "don't tell what the system was designed to do, tell me what it can do" guys and gals to use the famous Apollo 13 line. I knew then we needed these ranks in the Air Force for cyberspace so we too could have that level of expertise in the ranks. So good to see this. Entire Air Force careers can be built around being the leaders of highly complex and complicated technical systems as a career priority. It also provides new opportunities for our enlisted airmen to grow in their professional development and careers. Future airmen who will have some wrinkles and peppered hair will know how to push cyber to its limits for our nation.

I never expected my career to take off in the way it did! Do you remember the day, the event that jump-started your career? In my early days in the Marine Corps, right after my MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) school in 29 Palms, I was sent to my first duty station to HQMC at the Navy Annex in Arlington, VA. Like many data-comm (IT MOS) Marines, you typically start on the help desk, fixing printers, restarting PCs, pretending not to be shocked that such high-ranking officials could barely use a PC back in those days. One day, while on watch duty, I started tinkering with Python code just for fun. I had tried to learn C by myself, but it was proving very difficult; Python, on the other hand, just seemed to click with me. Little did I know my curiosity would be the jetpack that accelerated my career in tech! A Sergeant Neil Young (Non-Commissioned Officer, Several Levels above my rank then) noticed me typing away and asked what I was working on. I showed him my code, and he was impressed! He introduced me to the Operations lead, who needed another systems administrator to help run our network. I landed a role on that team and further honed my skills; the rest is history! I still had watch duty, but my two days of fixing PCs were over! What is the moral of the story? Remember to underestimate the power of exploring your interests and passions, even if it's just a side hustle. You never know where it might lead you! #careerjourney #python #tech"
