#ClimateWeekNYC and #UNGA Week are electric. You can feel the energy walking down the streets of New York City, and you can sense the anticipation and excitement in the conversations. But we all know climate change is happening and that urgent action is needed, so what’s next? Here’s a few of my big takeaways from this year: 1. As a corporation looking to advance sustainability action, start with your hot spots. What problems can you tackle immediately? Sustainability can feel daunting at times, but doing what you can today already puts you ahead of where you were yesterday. 2. The roles of Chief Sustainability Officers and Chief Financial Officers are becoming increasingly intertwined. To embed sustainability into core business processes and daily decision-making, we need to treat carbon like money. (Check out the article below!) 3. Take time to tap into the incredible pool of learning, resources, and communities of practices that exist. We are all on the journey together, and by teaming up, we can drive change more quickly. It was wonderful to meet so many of my sustainability colleagues for the first time or to reconnect after time away. Sophia Leonora Mendelsohn, Gunther Rothermel, Alicia Lenze, Deborah Kaplan, Pedro S. Pereira, Sean Boileau CMA, James Sullivan, Japen Hollist, Joe Mulligan, Thamara Ramirez-Walker Executive MBA, MS, CHIEF, Anina Monteforte, Ben Christensen, John Baxter, and many more! Seeing my sister, Mallory Cannon, speak about UN Global Compact Network USA's Climate Ambition Accelerator was another highlight! Being surround personally and professionally by incredible people committed to the same vision brings me motivation and hope for what’s to come. #SAPSustainability

Yesterdays session on "Funding Climate Change Initiatives - Who pays for it ?" was one of the more than 20 sessions, with more than 50 speakers and 450 attendees of our succesful 2nd Belgian Impact Day. Thanks Magali Minet for the perfect and professional moderation and my co-panellists Laurence CARON-HABIB and Constance d'Aspremont for their sharing their views on how regulation via EU & governments and better data & impact measurement can help to fund more of those needed Climate Change Initiatives and make them more effective ! My take away: to derisk financing climate initiatives for all, to democratize impact investing, some will have to take higher risks and continue pioneering. That's why we need Impact Finance Belgium. That's why we need to break the silo's and collaborate more between philanthropy, social first impact investing and finance first impact investing.

Business for Nature One of my key takeaways from attending climate week in NYC a few weeks ago, was the importance of nature and ensuring that biodiversity is protected. Restoring nature while maintaining biodiversity can be at least 30% of the solution to the climate crisis we are now in. Ironically, indiscriminately planting trees in a grab for carbon offsets can also create imbalance in local ecosystems, including displacing indigenous people, so more thought is needed. Investment in nature and biodiversity is woefully woefully inadequate, with too much always directed into climate tech - hoping for Unicorn level ROIs. Eva Zabey, CEO of Business for Nature (BFN), has informed my SEA working group for the Planetary Health Alliance (comprising over 380 universities, NGOs research institutes, and government entities from around the globe) that BFN will launch a new major business action campaign on nature on 9 November, called ‘It’s Now for Nature – where is nature in your business strategy?’ which aims to rally all businesses to act on nature. Through a new Nature Strategy Handbook, developed in collaboration with PwC, that aim of the campaign is to encourage companies to develop a nature strategy and publish it on the ‘It’s Now for Nature' website ahead of COP16, due to take place in October 2024. See these links: https://nowfornature.org/ https://lnkd.in/exPwEkAu The campaign will launch on 9 November at a global webinar for all businesses and financial institutions. There will be two sessions, which you are all welcome to join. * Session 1: 10:00 -11:15am CET (Register here: https://lnkd.in/e2EY55Yp) * Session 2: 4:00 - 5:15pm CET (Register here: https://lnkd.in/ehFkGN72) For background on Eva and Business for Nature, check out their recent X/Twitter or LinkedIn posts: https://lnkd.in/ebCcS37q https://lnkd.in/eadV2F6W Thank you.
