Finding Family and Purpose in Rotary... I just wanted to share a little about something that's brought so much joy and meaning into my life: Rotary. It's more than just a club; it's a tight-knit community dedicated to making the world a better place. From day one, I've been embraced by a group of people who aren't just friends—they're like family. They're always there to support, encourage, and uplift me, no matter what. But it's not just about the camaraderie. Rotary is all about making a difference. Whether it's tackling local issues or contributing to global causes, every project we take on is a chance to create positive change in the world. And the best part? While we're busy serving others, we're also growing personally and professionally. Through Rotary, I've gained invaluable skills, made lasting connections, and discovered a sense of purpose I never knew I was missing. So, if you've ever thought about joining Rotary, I say go for it. “Service Above Self”. When you hear those words, what does it mean to you? As a Rotarian, it goes beyond words for me. Service Above Self was a motto that came out of a conversation between two Rotarians during the 1911 National Rotary Convention in Portland, Oregon. After a slight modification, it was officially adopted by Rotary in 1950 at the Rotary International Convention in Detroit, MI. Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million people who are neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. 46,000+ global clubs work together to through focused Action Groups by area of : -Promote peace -Fight disease -Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene -Save mothers and children -Support education -Grow local economies -Protect the environment I originally joined Rotary in May 1999 during my consulting days in the DMV for Lockheed Martin. It proved to be a great way to meet like-minded people during my road-warrior days.  I did some service, though not a lot. In 2021 I joined my current club. The pandemic was still raging and so much had happened to me, my family, and friends. With all that was going on the world I knew that I needed to renew my commitment to Rotary International. Over the last couple of years, it has reshaped my thinking on Service above Self and how I want to live, both personal and professional. I now know I only want to work with people and companies that are action oriented to make a difference in the lives of people and the world. 𝐐𝐧𝐀 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬! Meet Lorna Vythilingum, Membership Director. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: What strategies do you plan to implement to foster a strong and engaged Rotaract community ? 𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫: First of all, I would like to create a welcoming atmosphere for new members by organising team-building activities and pairing them with mentors or fellow members. I believe this would make them more comfortable which would encourage them to interact with other Rotaract members to form personal connections. To further engage everyone in our community, I would like to collaborate with other Rotary clubs for mentorship programmes, community service projects and networking opportunities. This will not only contribute to the personal and professional growth of our members, but will also strengthen our relationship with other clubs. In this regard, it would foster a sense of purpose and shared values that will appeal to our members. Moreover, I intend to establish a feedback system to better understand member preferences, concerns, and suggestions so as to improve our service. Lastly, I intend to emphasize on the acknowledgement and appreciation of our members for their contributions through awards, certificates, or public recognition during meetings. I believe this would convey the sense of community ownership and engagement which is one of the values that our Rotaract preaches.

I'm a member of PAMPA - a community and network of producers, agents and managers (based across Europe) who work in the performing arts. There's 15 of us, all volunteering, coming together and dedicating our time to specific working groups and the wider PAMPA cause. Over the coming months we're hosting/holding some public spaces and sharing knowledge and resources to connect with others as we know the role of the independent producer can sometimes be lonely. 1) Come and join us in Brussels on 16th May at KFDA where we'll discuss, exchange knowledge and hear from KFDA Co-Artistic Director Daniel Blanga Gubbay. 2) We'll be sharing some findings of our Europe wide survey (analysed and supported by On The Move) which gathered 380 responses from people in 25 countries and creates a greater understanding of our realities and care responsibilities. 3) One of the areas I've been working on is a pool of resources - we’re attempting to gather and share links to existing online resources around our roles and working practices. There's over 100 so far split across case studies, fair practices, sustainability, finances, education and mobility. If you know of some resources that aren't on the list, there's a Google Form to tell us about it and I'll update it. 4) Next month (6th June, 13:00-14:30 CET) we're hosting our first Open Online Session for those who want connect, share thoughts and exchange on specific topics that are relevant to our work.
