CEO at Eat New Zealand (Aotearoa's Food Movement) & Co-Owner of The Food Farm. Doing my best to reconnect people to their food
'Schools who catered their lunches internally were “nailing it”, as one response said. They knew the attendance roll that day, they knew what the students liked and they were able to adapt fast to changes. Schools that offered hot lunches as opposed to cold lunches also saw little to no leftover meals. Sandwiches and cold lunches were frequently mentioned as being wasted.' So how is more packaged food going to solve this problem or reduce waste I wonder? We need to invest in our communities to enable them to look after each other, especially our children. A reminder again that 'reconnection' should sit at the top of the food waste minimisation hierachy. There is most definitely such a thing as a 'free lunch' when we take food out of transactional economy and reimagine it as a community good. If we lack imagination now we will pay dearly for this as a society in the future. New Zealand Food Waste Champions 12.3 Charitable Trust (NZFWC 12.3 Trust) https://lnkd.in/gVtV85qf
When it comes to free school lunches, how much waste can we live with?

First-Year Apple Picking was my introduction to MOVE and it was the start of a fairy tale that has no end. MOVE (and by association the MOVE office) quickly became my favorite thing/place about SMC. Here are five reasons why: 1. Heidi St. Peter and Erin Lyn Bodin: They are diamonds. 2. The best people: MOVE allowed me to meet some of the best people who became my friends and are still doing GREAT things to make a difference in this world. Special shout out to Jacob Pelletier, Jacob Joseph, Gracie Thorpe (Barney), Katherine Hackett, Taylor Mills Torres, Nora Moore, Jenna Burkhardt, Mike Brown, Victoria Barnum, Jill Monahan, and Jerry Carter who I consider MOVE junkies/truly changing the world. 3. Extended Service/Extended Service Committee: With Extended Service I had the opportunity to share in experiences that I continue to carry in my heart. 4. Head. Hand. Heart: If you know, you know. 5. That you can always come back to service. One thing I have learned is that St. Mike's provided opportunities to get involved in the community BUT as an adult how do you find your way? How do you leave your mark? How do you get involved? I don't know if I will ever learn the answers to those questions but that is the gift of service. It is always going back, finding your foundation, and having the hard conversations with yourself/others. Bonus: What ever happened to the M&M container? Where is it now? Was it ever cleaned? Challenge: Do ONE Random Act of Kindness. #smcvt #service #MOVE #friendship #community #leaders #getinvolved
Many Saint Michael’s students recently got their first taste of volunteering with MOVE, the College’s community service organization, during our annual First-Year Apple Picking event.🍎 Students helped sort apples at Chapin Orchards that were donated to Age Well for its Meals on Wheels program and to Heavenly Food Pantry in Essex. The non-profit community organizing ecosystem has many contradictions, acknowledged and grappled with daily. Unpacking these contradictions is a topic for another day. However, I firmly believe that at their best, non-profit base building organizations foster spaces where working-class people convene to discuss shared problems, find solutions, and collectively challenge power structures via direct action. The tenants in this article exemplified precisely that. Undoubtedly, further long-term efforts are necessary to strengthen relationships and connect the tenants of this particular Bronx building with the broader movement to de-commodify housing. NYCC takes immense pride in accompanying these tenants, creating the space for them to take action and secure the reinstatement of their cooking gas after a 16-month outage, thereby expanding the base of the movement advocating for housing as an intrinsic human right. https://lnkd.in/eR54Ph6d

Only four percent of American children eat their recommended servings of daily vegetables. Meanwhile, the entire global food chain may account for a third of what’s heating our planet. Our current food system is taking a toll on our health, the environment, our kids and the economy. Sacramento City Unified School District's Central Kitchen and The Food Literacy Center are more than health and nutrition education centers. With programs that have proven to be economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable, these projects may prove to be a model for systemic change in school districts around the United States. As an organization built around the tenets of health, wellness, and the environment, it was paramount that the headquarters reflected these same values while adhering to the non-profit’s budget. For over three-quarters of a century, HMC has provided innovative, sustainable, and progressive solutions to our clients' challenges. This dynamic thinking is central to the way we work. When you partner with us, you will see the difference in the HMC Experience. Learn how the HMC Experience resulted in significant results for Sacramento City Unified School District. #hmcarchitects #designforgood https://lnkd.in/ggwunEmJ

The start of our new temperate rainforest in the hyper-oceanic climate zone at the heart of Exmoor and part of an extensive nature based solution to slow the progress of water into the River Barle.
Thank you to everyone who came along to help plant trees for Kings Wood. Despite physical challenges working on a steep slope, everyone dug in and we planted 1000 trees – including oak and birch. To see progress so far - walk the lovely footpath from Simonsbath to Cow Castle. #volunteering #naturerecovery

Celebrate BMPP's Pho the Good of All, annual community celebration on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 11 AM - 1 PM at Eat Street Crossing. https://lnkd.in/gQHhFbhP Hear from the inspiring doers about the work they are doing and enjoy a free bowl of delicious pho with us. For 10 years, we've seen the power of collective giving. Building our Giving Circle has been an extension of the cultures of generosity that we all come from. We read the reports showing that for decades, less than 1% of all philanthropic dollars has gone to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in Minnesota and beyond. So we asked ourselves, what could we do about it? We asked for systemic change, but we didn’t wait to do our part. We created the Bad Mo Pho Phamily (aka Building More Philanthropy with Purpose) Giving Circle. We are a group of Asian American families who came together to pool our resources to fuel change for good. For 10 years, we've witnessed the incredible leadership of many acting to improve things. There was, and is, no shortage of good people who want to do the work of advancing social justice, but so many had yet to access funding support. We simplified our application and process, and the project ideas poured in. Those who would have worried they couldn't write a great proposal or didn't have relationships with funders were not afraid to apply for BMPP grants. They found their way to us, and we've been able to invest in over 60+ projects. Our giving circle is for our families, and our children have a say in what we support. Most importantly, they learned alongside the adults and realized their communities are not just communities in need. They saw that many, many leaders who look like them have worthy and excellent ideas for how to make things better. We haven't just hoped things would change; we helped fuel the doers that create change. In this 10th year, we are so proud of what we've all achieved together and want to celebrate with you. From humble beginnings, our 10 years together have meant... We've invested in over 60 projects in the Upper Midwest. We've pooled together $300,000 to invest in leaders and organizations in Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. We champion the doers who make our world more just, equitable and loving because when they act, we all win. To learn more about BMPP, please visit our website.
