Dan Primack of Axios has some choice words for VCs in this post. If you are an investor, LP or a founder raising money from VCs - worth the read. I tend to agree with Dan here and have some thoughts... 1) Private Equity is an ecosystem that relies on flow not a one-way transfer of assets. VC is semi-broken right now because no one wants to sell off a portfolio below performance targets. Could mean game over for the GPs. Seems like public, private and venture are all trying to remain optimistic while waiting for a drop in interest rates and an uptick in IPOs or PE buyouts to start the liquidity flow again but Fed and inflation data keep frustrating this kicking off. 2) VC have one core job as far as LPs are concerned....Create a magic black box that is a cash multiplier. Not a black hole! When and how early investments become liquid need to change also. 3) We have an 80 year old VC fund model that requires wild, best-case scenario power-law returns to generate the performance numbers the asset class promises to investors. This handcuffs GPs to staying in deals for a very long time as the early exits or lower deal multiples can drag funds performance and then their job security, fee structure, etc as I alluded to above. This also drives companies to "go big or go home" and operate with inherently more risk than stability. 4) Dan talks about the need for liquidity and to get back to the money flow. This is easier said than done as a minority investor. Incrementally easier if you and your co-investors are able to steer the company at the board level but its still "not your company" and the "market is the market" re comps/multiples and demand. 5) So - what can we, as an industry, do about this? We have to evolve. We have to have some hard conversations around the table and not let staid endowment funds and Goldman Sachs dictate how our industry looks at the future...feel like this becomes a new post or a series so I'll leave it here for now. #venture #VC #startups #privatequity

DNA testing? Perhaps not so hot after all. Another cautionary tale of a company where the hype was way ahead of the science (Theranos anyone?) and confirmation that "fake it till you make it" doesn't quite work in biotech. Which is not to say that we can't learn a lot from our DNA, there are already areas which support clinical decision making now (breast cancer) and companies doing good work in this space. Clearly, genome-based information will play bigger and bigger role in healthcare going forward, but the case of 23andMe underscores the importance of being cautious where customers send their hard earned money and separating marketing hype from absence of rigorous data.

Amongst other things, the funds will be used to support Limbics US expansion efforts. Exciting times ahead for Ross Harper & the entire Limbic team. ✅ UK firm RYSE has closed a new $50M fund. The fund will focus on scaling cutting edge Digital Health & Health Technology ventures. We can expect to see advancements in Digital Diagnostics, Therapeutics, and Digital Medical Devices as a result of the new fund. Combatting a various hurdles faced by not only the NHS, but healthcare systems on a global scale. The first early stage venture to benefit from this fund has been announced as Braingaze. Led by Laszlo Bax & Hans Supèr, Braingaze is a Spanish digital detection and treatment health tech company that is developing apps to treat and support conditions including ADHD, ASD, and dyslexia in children. ✅ INSIGHTECH raised $150M of venture funding in a deal led by Ally Bridge Group, Nexus Neurotech' and Fidelity Management & Research on June 18, 2024. Baillie Gifford and 4 other investors also participated in the round. The funds will be used to expand incision-less neurosurgery to the many patients suffering from movement disorders and continue to make calculated and strategic investments in new indications. ✅ The valuation in the round was not revealed, but according to Elbit Medical, which holds 3% of the company, the funding was raised at a $375 million valuation, down from $1 billion. Approximately two years ago, the company was in talks to merge with a SPAC at a value of $1.9 billion, but the deal did not materialize and the company's valuation plummeted. https://lnkd.in/gfT2cgNs

Congrats to University of Pittsburgh alumni Michael Leasure, Utkars Jain, and Adam Butchy (pictured left to right), Co-Founders of HEARTio, for being named Forbes' "30 Under 30 Healthcare" 2024! 🎉 HEARTio is developing an algorithm called ECGio to help doctors detect coronary artery disease faster. It is not yet FDA-cleared, but a validation study found the algorithm is able to take a highly accurate reading from an electrocardiogram and provide information about severe problems in seconds.
