Proud to partner with the @Pacific Institute to launch a new national assessment ‘Untapped Potential: An Assessment of Urban Stormwater Runoff Potential in the United States’ today. This assessment finds substantial opportunities for expanded stormwater capture and use approaches to improve water resilience in urban areas across the United States. This study estimates that U.S. Urban Areas have the potential to generate 59.5 million acre-feet of stormwater annually on average, equivalent to 93% of total municipal and industrial water withdrawals in 2015. This is equivalent to an annual average of more than 53 billion gallons per day. There is an outsized opportunity in coastal areas, which represent just 12% of urban land area and 37% of the national runoff generated, and stormwater capture in areas is less likely to have adverse impacts on downstream users.
