- When a job seeker tells me that no one ever reads the cover letter, I ask them why they think that is. And more often than not, our conversation reveals that most or all of their time is being spent applying for job after job via an online portal when they should be spending at least some of that time approaching recruiters and decision-makers directly. And if this is your primary method, I understand why you might feel this way. Sometimes online portals don't even give you a spot to add a cover letter. And even when they do, it can be hard to speak directly to someone in that letter because you're not sure who you're even talking to. It just feels so impersonal. On top of that, when you apply for a job through an online portal, especially if it's with a mid- to large-size company, chances are that your resume and cover letter aren't even going to be reviewed by a human first.
