Using the “switch it” technique
- Hey, Jeannie, I know you told me you're heterosexual and I accept that, but how do you know you're straight if you've never been with a woman? See what I just did there? I took a common question that often gets asked of lesbians and gay men, and I switched it to a situation with a straight woman. Doesn't really work, does it? I've been straight my entire life and no one has ever asked me this question. Double standards for people from the majority groups, like straight, cisgender people and people from underrepresented or marginalized groups like LGBTQ+ people, are common in our society. But they can be difficult for people from the majority groups to spot. The switch-it technique is a wonderful educational tool that can help us expose these double standards and inconsistencies.
