The LGBTQ+ initialism

- By the end of this course, I'll have said LGBTQ+ more than 60 times. If I wasn't using this abbreviated version, I'd probably have a tongue cramp by now. The last time I saw the full initialism written out, it was LGBTQQIAAA2SPP and growing. That's pretty clunky, and that's why people have been developing shorter, more user-friendly abbreviations. LGBTQ+ and LGBTQIA+ are currently some of the more common abbreviations in the US. Here's a bit of history about the ever-changing initialism, and a few evergreen tips that will help you decide which abbreviation to use. In the 1960s, the word gay came into popular use within the LGBTQ+ communities. It replaced the term homosexual, which carried, and still carries, negative connotations.
