(quiet piano music) - As urban designers, we often serve as conveners, bringing together a multi-disciplinary group of people to properly execute a big vision. In this LinkedIn learning course, I'm going to walk you through the basics of urban design and how it can be used at a variety of different scales to properly plan a successful 21st century city. Let's use the city of Portland as a case study and let's discuss the physical qualities of this city and how it pertains to big vision planning. It's important to use an existing city so that we can model the process of creating something that we call an urban design framework. Which is a roadmap for our city to help us shape the city skyline, plan our transportation network, green our city, and foster employment. Hi, I'm Marc. I'm an Urban Designer with the City of Portland. And my job enables me to think about cities. Not just cities as they are today, but how we want cities to look and function in the future.
