- Engaging in small talk in English with someone you don't know or don't know well, can be complicated. You may feel nervous about the language barrier between you and your conversation partner. You might be worried that your English isn't good enough to allow you to express yourself the way you'd like. Here are some tips and tricks for making these conversations easier and overcoming the language barrier. One thing many people worry about when speaking to someone in another language, is that the other person will speak too quickly. It's a natural fear. When people speak quickly, it's more difficult to understand them. If you're worried about this when making small talk, one thing you can do, is to slow down your own speech.
