- If you're having a small talk conversation with someone you'd like to develop a friendship or working relationship with, you need to do your part. It's frustrating to try and talk with someone who doesn't fully participate in the conversation. A person who doesn't contribute to carrying the conversation forward is most likely going to leave a negative impression. Even if your small talk skills aren't really a reflection of your value as a colleague, a poorly handled conversation could lead to missed opportunities. If you don't effectively engage in the conversation, the other person may leave thinking, "I don't think I could work with him. I can't even talk to him."
