Understanding VPN

- VPNs or virtual private networks are often used to help secure the process of data moving between devices. A VPN acts as a tunnel from one device across the internet to another device. This tunnel is often protected with encryption of various sorts. And so VPNs are commonly used by businesses and organizations who need to provide their employees or members secure access to protected resources like internal databases or other sensitive information or software. There are also commercial VPN providers which offer a secure tunnel from your device to their servers, allowing a protected connection through an untrusted network, out to the internet. VPN isn't a one-stop-shop data protection solution though. It's only part of the solution when it comes to protecting data. VPN protects data in flight or in transit, but not data at rest.
