- The finance team can be measured by looking at the company's financial metrics as well as how effectively the finance team is managing those metrics and your cash. Finance is a firm infrastructure value chain function because it is a core function for your business to actually run. Finance manages cash flow. The organization always needs enough cash to operate, and hopefully, if the company's doing well, that flow of cash grows over time. Finance needs to ensure the cash coming from operations and funding sources is sufficient to meet the company's obligations. As part of managing cash, finance is responsible for the balance sheet. Balance sheet management is about getting the right mix of funding sources to keep funding costs low while getting the highest yields on investments the company is making.
