- [Instructor] So, let's dive a little bit deeper into how you get compensated for licensing your music. Generally, there are two different ways you might receive income. An upfront fee for licensing the song. The master owner would receive payment, as well as the owner of the composition. And back-end royalties through your performance rights organization. Well, what is a royalty? Wikipedia has this to say: "Royalties are typically agreed upon as a percentage "of gross or net revenues derived from the use of an asset "or a fixed price per unit sold of an item of such. "A royalty interest is the right to collect "a stream of future royalty payments." So, how are these payments calculated? It's based on a number of factors. BMI describes it this way: "Royalty payments are based upon the license fees "that BMI collects from each network, "station, or digital service provider. "Royalty payment rates will vary from quarter to quarter "depending upon the amount of the license fees." You…
