- Any network is going to have a router with some type of firewall features in it. It's important and it's a great way to protect our networks from the evil of the internet. However, there's another place to firewall, and that is on the individual systems or what we call a host firewall. Now a network firewall like this or sometimes you'll hear the word edge firewall. This is great because it can watch traffic based on port numbers or IP address. It can filter on Mac addresses. It can do all kinds of cool stuff. But a firewall that sits on individual computers has some real power. In particular, a firewall that's sitting on an individual computer can actually see what processes are trying to send data out or receive data in from the internet.
