- There's a lot of stuff out there on the internet that's just well plain evil. So we need to do something to protect our networks from the evil, that is the internet. And we also need to protect the internet from the evil that can sometimes be us. And we do that through something called a firewall. Now, a firewall is really more of a verb than a thing. To firewall means to block traffic based on whatever type of criteria you think is important. You could block out certain IP addresses. You could block certain incoming port numbers. You could block based on time of day. You can block based on keywords of websites. It really just depends on your firewall more than anything else.
