From the course: Closing the Green Skills Gap to Power a Greener Economy and Drive Sustainability

The rise of eco-entrepreneurship

- Moving to a green economy means not only increased green scaling and green jobs, but also a new type of entrepreneurship, new ideas, new innovation, new businesses, equal new economic opportunity. LinkedIn's research shows that while green entrepreneurship is nascent, it's growing at a faster rate than overall entrepreneurship globally. And it's not just in sectors traditionally thought of as green, green founders are also leading the charge in architecture, design, finance, and software. While we are seeing increasing momentum in the United States and Europe, emerging economies are also catching up fast. For example, 20% of Brazil start-ups have workers with green skills. That's higher than the global average of 18%. Farming oil and gas and biotech sector start-ups boasts the highest number of green skilled workers. Meanwhile, in India, entrepreneurs are increasingly showing a high degree of green skills. Driven by a focus on sustainability at third level education, green founders are combining their tech and business acumen with green skills to drive innovation. This is positively impacting sectors like farming, oil and gas, and automotive, where the share of start-ups with green talent ranges from 45% to 65%. Meanwhile, in Mexico, entrepreneurs are driving green innovation in one of Latin America's largest economies. Some 11% of its start-ups have workers with green skills with sectors like energy, higher education, and automotive leading the way. Globally, the more entrepreneurs we can mobilize, the more green innovation will happen and more green jobs will be created. Fostering the growth and opportunities of green entrepreneurs by getting these founders networked, connected, and resourced will drive the development of green talent and green economies all over the world. Best of all, green entrepreneurs are playing their part in helping a planet achieve its climate change goals.
