- [Instructor] To better understand the networks that we're going to be building in this course, let's take a quick step back and consider traditional telephony networks. At the center of everything is the public telephone network. We call it the PSTN, the Public Switched Telephone Network for short. And if you still have a traditional analog phone in your home, then you're connecting into this PSTN with a cable that goes to your central office, your local CO, as it's called. And that cable is called the local loop. Oftentimes, people talk about having a landline as opposed to a cell phone. Well, that's an example of a landline. However, today many people have gone to cell phone only, but if you do have a traditional analog phone in your home, you're using this local loop to get back to the telephone company.
