Recognize microaggressions and exclusionary behaviors

- Workplace harm is a continuous cycle of exclusionary behaviors. We engage in it oftentimes without even realizing. A friend of mine was told by an older Black female colleague that Black women should stay away from certain hairstyles because they're unprofessional. My friend was astonished. As a Black woman, she expected her colleague to understand how Black hair is often vilified, but it could be this colleague had internalized stereotypes about Black hair and was perpetuating them with the junior Black employees. Think back to our discussion on internalized depression. Not dealing with our own can lead to microaggressive and exclusionary behaviors. Microaggressions are slights that people experience related to a marginalized identity.
