Youth Cheer/Tumbling Sports Instructor

Position Summary

The Youth Sports Instructor supervises groups of children and implements YMCA youth sports, fitness and P.E. activities. This person instructs children in all aspects of the sport, sets up and tears down program equipment, and ensures children are participating and learning in a safe manner.

Essential Functions

  • LEADS and PARTICIPATES in group activities and PERFORMS related skills.
  • FOLLOWS specific YMCA Standard Operating Procedures.
  • IMPLEMENTS program activities and special events.
  • PROMOTES and EMBRACES Character Development and Developmental Assets in curriculum.
  • REPORTS problems/concerns to supervisor.
  • SERVES as a positive role model for program participants.
  • BUILDS and MAINTAINS a high standard of member service for all program participants.
  • PROMOTES safety as an overriding objective in all programming efforts.
  • IMPLEMENTS programs in the areas of Sports & Recreation for youth, teens and adults and families.
  • CONTRIBUTES to a positive work environment.
  • PERFORM all other duties as assigned.

Abuse Risk Management Functions

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situation.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers Certification (within 30 days of hire).

OTHER SKILLS And ABILITIES

  • Strong skills in: Communication, leadership, judgement, creativity
  • Working knowledge of YMCA policy and organization.
  • Working knowledge of sports in general as well as the specific sport for which you are applying; (Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Football, Karate, Cheer, etc.)
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques.
