Pay Range: $18.25 - $23.00 per hour

General Summary

Under the general supervision of the Security Manager, the Park Ranger is responsible for protecting and conserving Hyland Hills parks and outdoor space. Park Rangers will interact with visitors, enforce park rules, maintain the safety of trails, provide emergency care, provide security at all Districted-hosted concerts & events, and coordinate environmental education programs. This is a highly visible position for our community, which is responsible for providing information and courteous service to our visitors.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Builds relations with community organizations to enable the District to meet the security needs of the community; serves as liaison with community stakeholder groups, as needed.
  • Assists with providing leadership and guidance to the security personnel, overseeing their daily activities.
  • Performs cleaning and light maintenance of pavilions, bathrooms, and park equipment, as well as park grounds.
  • Conducts visitor contacts on trails to provide park information and promote stewardship efforts utilizing a vehicle or on-foot patrol.
  • Logs daily contacts and activities consistently and accurately.
  • Documents and reports incidents and visitor complaints.
  • Communicates appropriately with other Hyland Hills staff on reports, observations, and visitor issues.
  • Assist the Parks staff with operational duties and events.
  • Assists the Recreation staff with operational duties and events.
  • Assists and job-shadow park security personnel and police officers in their daily duties, at concerts or other special events, as assigned.
  • Parking lot patrol and citing violations.
  • Directs customer interactions; utilizes education rather than punishment for park violators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned during the off season, such as participating in seasonal events and assists with other projects, security and emergency preparedness drills District – wide.
  • May be required to attend officer safety training with local police departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Must have the ability to attend Excellence School Park Ranger training.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, operations, and goals of the District and its various departments.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of security and law enforcement practices.
  • Receive and maintain CPR, First Aid, Narcan and AED certification.
  • Provide the opportunity to shadow security and police officers as well as aid with environmental education programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with District management, employees, elected officials, local law enforcement, community members and the public.

Working Environment/Physical Activities

  • Work is constantly performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures, hot and cold.
  • Frequent sitting to perform designated office tasks and to survey park for hazards and potential problems; constant standing and walking over uneven terrain in all weather conditions to address hazards and potential park violations with public; occasional running to address emergency situations.
  • This is a highly active and visible position within multi-use parks and facilities where periods of high activity and stress may exist.
  • Work is conducted primarily in the parks and open space settings, and the employee is required to travel to various sites throughout District.
  • Frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, balancing, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform park maintenance and other related duties; occasional crawling and climbing to perform various park duties.
  • Frequent light and firm grasp to safely use tools and equipment; constant fine manipulation and handling to perform maintenance and other duties.
  • Occasional step up/down from vehicles and stairs; constant actuate mechanism to safely operate equipment; normal near and far acuity to observe park for potential hazards and maintenance issues, and hearing to communicate with public, groups, and staff.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.

Education/Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in Parks, Recreation, Open Space, Natural Recreation, law enforcement or a similar field is preferred.
  • Must be First Aid, CPR and AED certified or willing to acquire certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with a safe driving record.
