Wellin Museum Education Assistant

This position supports the Wellin Museum education department through a variety of administrative, logistical, research, and programmatic tasks. The goals of the education department are to provide experiential learning opportunities to Hamilton students through the docent program and other student initiatives, and to bolster connections with the campus, local, and regional communities through student-led events, campus outreach, K-12 workshops and resources, family and youth programming, and public programs.

This is a part time, non-benefitted position with a pay range of $18.50 - $22.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative support: Assists with mailings, scheduling, and general correspondence for all Wellin education programs (including the docent program, K-12 programs, Wellin Kids, Middle School Makers, and Wellin Mail). Submits updates for education section of Wellin website to office administrator, including up-to-date photography and program information. Continually updates contact databases for K-12 audiences (educators and administrators). Tracks and reports attendance figures for on-site and virtual programs. Helps maintain accurate calendar entries for all educational programming. Tracks supply inventory and places orders when needed with the assistance of the office assistant. Ensures timely K-12 workshop pre-visit and post-program communication with educators. Sends sign-up confirmations, program materials, and content updates to Wellin Mail participants. Assists with student scheduling.
  • Programming: Provides technical support for virtual K-12 workshops (such as screen and audio sharing during workshops). Assists with event planning for education programs including docent meetings, campus events, and community outreach. Assists with on-site programming as needed (set-up, greeting participants and other event support, clean-up).
  • Teaching and other duties: Occasionally facilitates museum programs in the informal learning environment, including gallery teaching and studio art instruction. Reviews program plans and assignments with student docents, as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred in education, art history, studio art, museum studies, or related field. Associates Degree with equivalent experience also accepted. 1-2 years of experience working in an office setting required. Experience working in a K-12 school environment, art museum, or higher education environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High level of organizational skill required.
  • Interest in museum education, art education, and art history.
  • Proficiency with the Google Drive and Google suites (Google docs, sheets, slides).
  • Familiarity with Adobe software including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
  • Familiarity with museum accessibility guidelines and general museum education principles.
  • Positive demeanor.
  • Proficiency with technical equipment, such as A/V systems.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise initiative and good judgment to successfully organize and complete assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate and work as part of a small team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, visitors, and community members.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in the field.
  • Ability to travel, work evenings and/or weekends as necessary in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
