The Team You Will Join

Compliance Risk Management (CRM) delivers a compliance risk framework that enables the businesses and functions to comply with applicable internal and external rules and regulations and maintain risk levels within MetLife’s risk appetite. CRM provides constructive challenge to the businesses and functions, partnering closely with them to implement strong processes and effective controls, as well as to foster and embed a culture of compliance. CRM is part of Global Risk Management (GRM).

The Opportunity

The U.S. CCO is responsible for compliance coverage of MetLife’s U.S. businesses and functions, which includes Retirement & Income Solutions (annuities, risk protection, and stable value), MetLife Holdings, and Group Benefits (life, disability, dental, and vision), and provides benefits to over 55,000 group customers covering more than 41 million employees and their families. The incumbent will strategically lead a team to maintain, and develop and implement as needed, an effective compliance program to mitigate and manage compliance risk in adherence with applicable regulatory requirements and laws. Being a collaborative, proactive, and strategic leader who anticipates where issues may arise is critical, and the ability to foresee regulatory expectations are key to success in the role. The incumbent will be required to make sound, judgment-based decisions, and answer complicated compliance risk-related questions, create controls to mitigate risks, exercise judgment, escalate to senior management for consideration and deliberation, and manage a team of compliance professionals who do the same. This role entails working closely and collaboratively with business management and the functions on strategic initiatives and emerging issues and will work closely and collaboratively across the department and company.

How You’ll Help Us Build a Confident Future (Key Responsibilities)

  • Advise on and provide credible challenge to compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and compliance policies.
  • Lead a team responsible for executing a fit for purpose compliance program, including an annual testing & monitoring plan designed to test the effectiveness of key first line controls.
  • Work collaboratively with U.S. business and functional partners and senior leaders including those in Global Technology & Operations, GRM, Legal Affairs, and Internal Audit, and participate in risk committee meetings.
  • Identify and communicate results of compliance risk assessments, compliance issues, and control concerns to appropriate senior management.
  • Stay abreast of changes in the regulatory environment, analyze the business impact of regulatory changes, and work with the businesses and functions to implement changes accordingly.
  • Design and implement appropriate processes to ensure timely and effective controls are in place to mitigate compliance risk.
  • Manage advisory compliance and associated control environments and strike the balance between serving as trusted advisor to the business and encouraging a culture of robust challenge to the business, e xercising proactive and independent judgment when providing advice to the businesses and functions.
  • Review existing compliance policies and procedures and make enhancements to strengthen processes, procedures and policies to achieve adherence to applicable laws, rules and regulations.
  • Work with management to ensure continued improvement in self-identification of issues, and appropriate escalation and monitoring processes for timely and effective remediation in mitigating compliance risk.
  • Interface with senior management to ensure effective awareness of key compliance risk areas and strong engagement by local businesses and operations; develop and implement training as needed on relevant compliance regulations and processes.
  • Participate in and lead meetings with key business partners to stay informed of new product development, business strategies and initiatives, and emerging risks.
  • Champion a high-performance environment and implement a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and embraces diversity and motivates teams by fostering an inclusive work environment.
  • Be a transformational leader to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Maintain staffing levels in support of business strategy with resources of requisite experience and skillsets, and actively create and update succession plans, providing opportunity for talent to develop.
  • Work closely with peers in CRM to ensure consistent processes and approaches are followed and that synergies are realized, breaking through silos and encouraging a collegial and globally coordinated and consistent CRM model.


What You Need To Succeed (Required Qualifications)

  • 15+ years of experience in related business (insurance/financial services) in compliance, legal, audit, or related role, including time in a leadership position.
  • Understanding of non-financial risks, including the U.S. regulatory environment and expectations.
  • Easily translates complex matters to business executives and externally can interface with relevant regulatory authorities.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to establish credibility, create partnerships, and build relationships at all levels.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations to all audiences including executive management.
  • Dedicated and self-motivated, with an ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations applicable to MetLife’s varied operations, including state insurance laws, federal securities laws, and other applicable regulatory regimes.
  • High degree of professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion in contacts with management and associates.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to develop partnerships and relationships throughout the organization.
  • Ability to think proactively and make recommendations and complex decisions, and to anticipate regulatory needs and expectations and plan for them.
  • Exceptional ability to manage confidential information in a professional manner.
  • Thinks 2-3 years ahead and can identify how to accomplish future goals.
  • Educational background – minimum bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university; J.D. preferred.


The salary range for applicants for this position is $229500 - $306000 - This role is also eligible for annual short-term incentive compensation and stock-based long-term incentives.
