The Vice President, General Counsel is responsible for providing legal guidance to the CEO and Executive team and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations. The VP General Counsel’s responsibilities include supporting and overseeing the work of the Legal and Compliance departments and delivering advice, guidance, and strategic counsel that aligns with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska’s (BCBSNE) business objectives, mission, and values. This role will oversee a team of direct reports and will represent BCBSNE and its business operations with stakeholders and external audiences.

What You'll Do

  • Provide balanced business and legal advice, guidance, and strategic counsel for the Company.
  • Build and maintain a strong understanding of the Company’s business, health insurance, government programs, and the market.
  • Responsible for oversight of the Company’s compliance and ethics program.
  • Oversee the company-wide systems for the reporting of violations of the Company’s ethical standards and violations of law or corporate policy, ensuring appropriate investigation response and reporting, as necessary.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of direct reports. Build a strong talent pipeline for both current and future legal and compliance operations.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Company’s Board of Directors.
  • Direct and oversee the hiring of outside counsel.

To Be Considered For This Position, You Must Have

  • Juris Doctor (JD) law degree and fifteen years of progressive experience working in a law firm, corporate legal department, or in a capacity requiring delivering legal services to clients.
  • Licensed to practice law in the state of Nebraska or the ability to be licensed within 12 months of employment.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing employees.
  • Experience advising high-level executives on critical legal, strategic, and business issues while working in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to think critically and analytically to anticipate risks in advance, a passion for solving business problems, and a proven track record of success in a similar role.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for this requirement.

The ability to meet or exceed the attendance and timeliness requirements of their departments.

The ability to work well in a team environment and be capable of building and maintaining positive relationships with other staff, departments, and customers.
