VP CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

UTLX LEASING BUSINESS UNIT / MARMON RAIL GROUP

Candidates are required to live near Chicago, IL, or Oakville, Ontario for in-office meetings, hybrid work schedules, etc.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The VP of Continuous Improvement is responsible for partnering with North America Leasing (UTLX and Procor) employees to imagine, develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives that promote optimized portfolio earnings, a best-in-class offering including customer service and experience, employee satisfaction and productivity with acceptable levels of business risk to position Railcar Leasing, North America for a future of continued success.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with employees to identify improvement opportunities and prioritize efforts
  • Engage in the harmonization of UTLX and Procor processes, systems, databases and better handoffs between LBU and RBU processes
  • Re-imagine processes which are more efficient, minimize business risk, require fewer touches, result in fewer frustrations, reduce errors and optimize earnings
  • Ensure such improvement plans are vetted, as simple as possible, and feasible
  • Partner with Human Resources to lead the Change Management relating to such improvements
  • Leverage broader workforce to assist in projects to provide opportunities for stretch assignments and to gain different perspectives
  • Arrange for identification of targeted training opportunities for members of the broader workforce and arrange through Marmon Holdings, Marmon Rail or third parties to conduct such training if training cannot be performed through CI team
  • Perform or oversee performance of Lean activities, with the goal of actionable findings
  • Leverage Lean tools for improvement: workflow, updates to SOPs, training, technology, etc.
  • Collaborate with IT Product Director to develop and execute technology strategy
  • Build case for and prepare AFEs for related capital requests, as needed
  • Manage a team of 2-6 employees
  • Scope includes improvement projects in cooperation with other Marmon Rail affiliate business units
  • Represent Leasing as a member of Marmon’s Lean Council, participating as appropriate and staying abreast of Corporate Lean developments, training programs and ongoing reporting requirements
  • Chicago or Oakville located with up to 3 days per week in office; Up to 30% travel expected included between US and Canada

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Advanced problem-solving
  • Management of multiple projects simultaneously with prioritization based on business needs
  • Self-starter and strong completion skills
  • Ability to influence and obtain buy-in, gain support for change
  • Coach/mentor less-experienced employees
  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas and data to extract insights and develop actionable plans
  • Experience in the use of Lean methodologies and tools relevant for the Railcar Leasing business model and improvement opportunities
  • Demonstrated imagination
  • Securing employee commitment/change management
  • Establish and maintain governance frameworks for continuous improvement projects

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Trained in Lean and Lean tools relevant for the Railcar Leasing business model, Quality certified preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Operations, Business or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience in a services environment with leadership or project management skills.
  • Experience working with employees at all levels on process improvement
  • Railcar leasing experience preferred / Railcar industry
  • Strong business acumen including financial and operational exposure
  • Tenacity for identifying opportunities for improvements and developing solutions.
