VP - Chief Information Security Officer

Job Summary:

Citizens’ Chief Information Security Officer is responsible for establishing and leading a modern information security program. Responsible for Citizens’ activities related to the availability, integrity and confidentiality of customers, business partner, employee, and business information in compliance with Citizens’ information security policies. At the same time, partners with business units and leadership as a business enabler permitting Citizens to accomplish business functions securely. Responsible for ensuring that information security strategy aligns with leadership priorities and industry best practices. Coordinates a team responsible for implementing the information security program in accordance with defined strategies and for monitoring the effectiveness of the program.

Job Duties / Essential Functions:

  • Facilitates a work environment that fosters and supports ethical decision-making and actions by motivating, promoting, and modeling ethical behavior, as well as executing job responsibilities in accordance with Citizen’s core values, ethics, and information protection policies.
  • Responsible for managing staff, including hiring, goal setting, planning and delegation of work, training and development, coaching/mentoring and completing performance evaluations.
  • Information Security Program and Strategy:
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate enterprise-wide information security program in alignment with Citizens’ goals, values, business needs and compliance responsibilities. Work directly with business units and leadership to develop strategies enabling effective business operations while maintaining security. Coordinate risk management activities relating to information security and cultivate a culture of information security risk management throughout the enterprise.
  • Information Security Governance:
  • Coordinate, in conjunction with Privacy, IT and other business units, IT Security Governance activities, including monitoring, evaluating, reporting on, directing security efforts, and establishing security related policies and procedures. Partner and collaborate with leadership and subject matter experts on privacy, compliance, and risk mitigation activities, including development of strategies and solutions that meet compliance and regulatory requirements and that align with industry best practices.
  • Communication:
  • Promote understanding of and compliance with security principles throughout the organization. Coordinate training of information security staff to meet technical security needs and coordinate training of all employees on their security requirements. Coordinate internal and enterprise communications and communicate technical information in a manner that enables effective strategic decisions for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Incident Response:
  • Proactively collaborate with both internal and external business partners responsible for information technology and data security on incident response preparedness and implementation.
  • Lead and support presentations to Board, Executive Management, and other stakeholders and provide continuing education on goals, objectives, and accomplishments of this unit.


Required Education and Experience:

  • 14 years of relevant experience in information Security, with at least 5 years working with complex, enterprise-level security programs.
  • At least 9 years of experience managing or leading staff and/or partnering with senior leadership on significant related responsibilities.
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 3 years relevant experience, OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 3 years


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Broad technical knowledge of information security technologies, processes, and the relevant threat landscape.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant information security frameworks and industry best practices.
  • General knowledge of the legal requirements applicable to information security.
  • Understanding of the business needs of the enterprise and the security activities necessary to enable achievement of business goals.
  • Knowledge of corporate risk management principles.
  • Ability to build and leverage strong relationships internally and externally, resulting in successful implementation of strategic priorities, operational improvements, and corporate objectives.
  • Strong leadership skills, both within the information security business unit and as a collaborator with other business units and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Forward-thinking and creative; has confidence to present and advocate for implementation of ideas.
  • Strong sense of urgency, personal responsibility, accountability; self-motivated, efficient, and effective.
  • Ability to be both proactive and reactive and decisive in a fast-paced, highly visible, heavily regulated legal entity.
  • Ability to initiate, organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple & complex projects.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and critical information appropriately.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.


Scope/Complexity of Work:

What percentage of time is accountable for long-term strategic planning? 60%

What percentage of time is accountable for short-term operational goals? 30%

What percentage of time is accountable for transactional, day-to-day operational support? 10%

Occasional: Travel, Ability to be on call and support a 24 hour/ day and 7 day/ week operations environment as needed.
