Vocal Director

92nd Street Y New York, NY

The Vocal Director will train and prepare the cast in vocal technique, harmonization, and interpretation of songs. This role will ensure that each performer delivers their lines and songs with clarity, emotion, and musicality, enhancing the overall quality of the production.

  • Lead vocal rehearsals, providing guidance on vocal technique, expression, and character development.
  • Work closely with the director to ensure artistic vision and vocal direction align with the overall production concept.
  • Provide individual coaching to performers to enhance their vocal skills and confidence.
  • Create rehearsal tracks and materials as needed to support vocal rehearsals and performances.
  • Foster a positive and supportive rehearsal environment conducive to artistic growth and collaboration.
  • Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and performances as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, theater, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven experience as a vocal director or similar role in musical theater, particularly for young audiences.
  • Strong understanding of vocal technique, musical interpretation, and character development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with artists of all ages.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, creative environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Passion for and commitment to creating high-quality theater experiences for young audiences.


Flexible schedule; primarily weekday mornings 900 a.m. – 200 p.m. with occasional weekend mornings.

Per Diem Compensation

$50/hour

The actual compensation offered will be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to the qualifications of the applicant, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
