Density

Vice President, Software Engineering

Density San Francisco, CA

About Density

Density's mission is to measure and improve our footprint on the world.

We help companies understand how their workplaces are used. We do that by observing behavior in the office through our highly accurate and always anonymous sensors. In other words: where are people actually spending their time?

We translate that data into actionable, opinionated insights that help companies increase the financial and experiential performance of any workplace.

Today, we work with companies from Fortune 500s to high growth innovators in technology, financial services and healthcare, occupying more than a billion square feet worldwide.

And we're in it for the long game: what if we knew more, created better spaces, and could build cities that worked and felt better? That's where you come in.

The Opportunity:

This role will lead our core software engineering teams. We have built many portions of the full stack as part of our mission to better measure and communicate the utilization of space through people counting. The person who joins us will be the leader of our embedded, metadata, streaming data pipelines and storage, APIs, internal tools, and customer-facing front end teams. We are looking for someone with excellent aptitude for both technical and organizational challenges. Someone who can balance velocity, quality, and consistent growth of a healthy engineering culture.

In this role you will:

  • Lead an organization that is capable of both rigorous technical decision-making and rapid experimentation.
  • Use your deep technical expertise to set priorities and vision for software engineering based on customer and product priorities.
  • Be responsible for engineering execution, building systems on time that meet their performance and cost targets.
  • Identify, attract, empower, and retain excellent engineering talent to build a strong and healthy team.
  • Represent software engineering to the executive leadership by distilling key technical tradeoffs to help us make the best decisions we can with the data we have.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10+ years leading software engineering teams or departments.
  • Experience managing engineering leaders. Bonus if experience managing global teams.
  • Strong technical aptitude across the majority of the domains that will be part of the team: embedded software, networking, relational databases, latency-critical data streaming, mass data storage and retrieval, API, and web front-end.
  • Confident, clear, and humble communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to distill ambiguous challenges into actionable plans that make progress against the fundamental problem.

We offer:

  • Excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, mental and reproductive health, 401K, equity, Flex Fridays, Remote Friendly, unlimited and mandatory PTO and more.
  • A company full of fun, smart, talented and legitimately kind teammates. Our culture powers everything we do and we work hard to nurture it by bringing on the right humans.
  • A team hailing from innovators like Apple, Amazon, LinkedIn, Stripe, Meraki, Flexport, WeWork, NASA & beyond.
  • $227M raised from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund and Upfront Ventures.
  • The chance to change the built world as we know it.
