The Vice President of Advancement and Marketing sets and executes fund development and strategies, manages a team of talented professionals and a portfolio of donors and prospects. The VP of Advancement and Marketing is responsible for developing a diverse and sustainable local funding base to achieve the funding growth necessary to support the organization and ensures consistent, positive messaging to the public for affiliate programs including the ReStore network. The role is expected to accomplish this by fostering a culture of philanthropy; planning, cross-functional coordination and assuring implementation of strategies to develop donors, customers, support, awareness and contributions to support the organization. Assures development and maintenance of appropriate systems for fund development, marketing and communications including, but not limited to, fundraising, volunteer and donor management, research and cultivation, gift processing, strategic messaging, website, online efforts, and recognition. Maintains accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Strategy, Planning and Operations Management
Assess and evaluate fundraising and marketing performance of organization with regard to long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts
Provide insight and recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plan of organization
Identify, acquire and implement systems and software to provide critical advancement information. Evaluate departments and make suggestions for automating processes and increasing working efficiency related to advancement and marketing
Communicate, engage and interact with Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team
Create and establish yearly advancement and marketing objectives that align with the company’s plan for growth and expansion
Create long-range fund development, marketing and communication vision and annual strategic and operating plans
Works to ensure, directly and with team, that Habitat Chesapeake maximizes opportunities, meets its goals, and grows funding while building sustainability
Set ambitious yet feasible revenue, donor quantity and retention benchmarks to achieve both immediate (current FY) and long-term (next 3-5 years) development goals.
Develop and implement strategies and tactical plans to achieve goals for different donor segments.
Develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and prospects.
Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of donors
Manage portfolio of Habitat Chesapeake’s top 50 (in terms of highest giving potential and inclination) prospects and donors
Support the Impact Campaign Committee and work closely with its leadership volunteers to ensure success of the campaign
Solicits contributions on behalf of the organization, ideally by, but not limited to, accompanying volunteers
Build and execute strategic plans to expand the donor base, increase donor renewal and upgrade rates
Prioritize actions for the CEO and board members to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects and prepares/supports the CEO to execute
General Oversight
Provide general oversight of all of the organization’s fund development, marketing and communication activities, manage the day-to-day operations and monitor adequacy of activities through coordination with staff, appropriate committees, and governing body
Assure development and writing of foundation, corporate and government proposals and solicitation materials
Assure design and maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management and processing systems, and informational reports
Assure fundraising report reconciliation with financial reports
Assure design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs
Assure integrated marketing and communications efforts across the organization
Serve as staff lead on the Development Committee. With the development committee chair(s), develop agendas for committee meetings so that the committee can fulfill its responsibilities effectively and draft committee reports to the Board of Directors.
Inform the CEO and volunteer leadership on the condition of the organization’s fund development program and on all important factors influencing it
Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives
Keep informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development, marketing and communications, as well as the general fields of management and the nonprofit sector; inform the CEO, Development Committee and Board of Directors on current trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy making
Recommend policy positions concerning fund development and marketing
Staff Management/Development
Ensure that consistent, positive messaging occurs and that the public is educated on a regular basis about the work of Habitat for Humanity via media, the web and through events.
Ensure that appropriate materials are developed and available for ongoing use and for special events.
Ensure materials and calendars support robust direct mail program.
Engage in ongoing building and maintenance of media relationships: contact information, coordination of media at events and for campaigns, coordination of spokespeople, tracking of media placements.
Plan, implement and maintain media presence for all Habitat services, programs, personnel and events, including social media.
Develop and maintain a crisis communications plan; ensure related resources are in place.
Lead event planning for affiliate.
Propose related budget and manage within approved budget; related accountabilities for financial results.
This position manages multiple team members in advancement and marketing areas.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
A minimum of seven years fundraising experience in a professional position and demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money
Comprehensive management skills and experience including, but not limited to, short and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff and volunteers, oral and written communication skills, marketing and financial management, and governance
Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, marketing strategies including online and web presence, and development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting
Skill in donor database management systems is essential; Proficient in Microsoft office
Familiarity with computer systems and social media tactics is necessary
Expertise managing both fundraising and communications functions including implementation of special gifts / capital campaign
Skilled in project management
