Veterinary Technician - Puppy Parvo ICU

Schedule: Full Time, 4 - 10 hours shifts/Days

Reports To: Shelter Medical Manager

A Day In The Life

Our Puppy Parvo ICU is unique to the valley as we provide ill puppies surrendered to the Arizona Humane Society and those at other shelters with a second chance. You will hold a key role in providing a healing and supportive environment by providing for both the physical and mental health of Puppy Parvo ICU patients through industry-leading complete care. You will assist the veterinarians in the treatment of the animals in the Puppy Parvo ICU which may include radiology, laboratory diagnostics, client education, clinic asepsis, fluid therapy, and the administration of prescribed medications.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma / GED
  • Completion of a veterinary technician program
  • At least 3 years of experience as Tech II/ CVT in a veterinary clinic/hospital
  • Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, pharmacology and perform safe and humane animal handling.
  • Must be proficient in anesthesiology.
  • Perform physical exams on all animals, set IV catheters on the most critical patients.
  • Collect, prepare, and submit all lab samples to outgoing vendors. Complete any in-house laboratory testing for animals under treatment.
  • Administer treatment to the sick and recovering animals currently in the Puppy Parvo ICU, which may include reconstituting medications and the use of fluid and syringe pumps.
  • Understand and adhere to all set cleaning, chemical, handling, and safety procedures.
  • Feed, water, and maintain habitats in accordance with departmental and organizational standards at all times.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air-conditioned and heated office environment.
