Varsity Baseball Head Coach

Job Description

General Summary: Successfully develops a team and individuals in the USM athletic program within the philosophies of the school which is guided by our Common Trust. USM is committed to academic and athletic excellence. The head coach will lead and support a positive, educational based athletic program that closely follows the culture and interests of the school. This opportunity could be combined with an academic or administrative position in the school.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to establish a vision for the program from starting level to varsity and effectively communicate it to all levels of the program.
  • Be familiar with and be willing to promote the school’s mission, philosophy and objectives.
  • Be a team player in a positive, student-centered athletic office by contributing ideas, service and time to improve the overall program.
  • Know and understand the rules and regulations of chosen sport as well as USM’s general policies.
  • Set program and seasonal goals for the long and short term and be able to pursue them until completion.
  • Ability to set clear program standards and have all members of the program adhere to them.
  • Work with student-athletes during and outside of the season to help them reach their post-high school goals. Including setting up off-season training, assisting with college recruiting (as necessary), and finding off-season playing opportunities for players.
  • Be a positive role model for student athletes and represent the values and reputation of USM in a very public role. Actively promote student safety, dignity and respect.
  • Be a strong communicator to varying constituencies including, but not limited to: parents, players, athletic department staff, coaching staff, faculty, opponents, officials as well as media.
  • Be readily responsive to communication from the athletics office.
  • Organize all administrative aspects of the program including, but not limited to: media relations, directing assistant coaches, working with booster team parents to organize team events, and seasonal record keeping.
  • Attend performance meetings with Director of Athletics: pre- and post-season goals meetings as well as informal meetings throughout the season.
  • Participate in budgeting meetings with the Director of Athletics.
  • Supervise student-athletes in an appropriate and positive manner.
  • Work directly with the Athletic Operations Coordinator (AOC) for game day set up, equipment purchases, inventory and care for uniforms and equipment as well as being a positive steward for all USM’s facilities.
  • Communicate post game results and other noteworthy news items with the Assistant Athletics Director and Director of Athletics in a timely manner so they can be communicated through social media outlets.
  • Compile end of season statistics and important facts and return to the Assistant Athletic Director prior to the end-of-season assembly.
  • Keep current on coaching trends in field and utilize professional development opportunities whenever appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as necessary to better the program as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of team sport (specific), its operations and equipment
  • Ability to understand developmental levels of students and apply to practice
  • Ability to competently use technology
  • Experience working with diverse population and clientele with high expectations
  • Effective communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
  • Excellent organizational skills with a strong degree of self-direction and motivation
  • High level of maturity, confidentiality and assertiveness
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to work over weekends and holidays as dictated by seasonal schedule

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • 2-4 years of coaching experience
  • Seniority level
