Underwriting Manager-Reinsurance (Remote)

Position Overview: This role is responsible for ensuring appropriate application of the underwriting discipline in the evaluation of public entity risk associated with a large multi-line reinsurance captive program. This involves acceptability and pricing of coverage and ensuring sound decision-making throughout the underwriting cycle.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES


Risk Analysis and Program Development:


  • Analyze and underwrite reinsurance for workers’ compensation, property, liability risks and other lines as required.
  • Evaluate financials, legal documents, and other relevant information to make informed decisions.
  • Collaborate with members and brokers to understand their requirements.
  • Provide coverage interpretation, policy and endorsement provisions, and underwriting acceptability.
  • Conduct underwriting analyses around key business functions, metrics, and process enhancement.



Policy Administration:

  • Review contracts and policies to ensure compliance with insurance coverage requirements, certificates of insurance, limits, and makes recommendations.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions of reinsurance contracts.
  • Ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop/evaluate ceded and assumed insurance/reinsurance contract wording.
  • Issue policies and endorsement.

Program Monitoring:

  • Monitor the effectiveness of reinsurance programs.
  • Assess performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with other departments to optimize processes.

Relationship Management:

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with members, reinsurers, and partners.
  • Act as a point of contact for inquiries and escalations.
  • Perform field activities such as attending board meetings, member meetings, and training.
  • Proactively build relationships with existing and prospective members to move the organization forward.

Team Coordination and Training:

  • Oversee the operations of the reinsurance and underwriting team.
  • Provide training and education on reinsurance and underwriting matters.
  • Foster a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Participate in and lead key projects that impact underwriting and other related departments.
  • Create and enhance workflows and quality reviews to ensure efficiency and accuracy.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • 20% Travel or as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Licensing

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Finance, Risk Management, Insurance) required.
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), and/or Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designations preferred.



Experience

  • Seven (7+) years of property/casualty and/or workers' compensation underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Underwriting experience with public entity pools and their respective exposures and coverages preferred. Proven experience in reinsurance underwriting, preferably in a managerial capacity.


Skills & Knowledge


  • Understanding of the rating methodology of workers’ compensation, property, and liability insurance coverage(s).
  • Solid math skills including the ability to calculate figures accurately and efficiently.
  • Analytical and interpretive skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to reason, solve practical problems, and interpret a variety of information and instructions.
  • Ability to lead projects and team initiatives.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization and external customers.
  • Proficiency in working effectively in a team environment, when working independently and when working offsite or remotely.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • PC literate, including Microsoft Office and other system products.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems and industry-specific software.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and market trends.
  • Ability to meet or exceed Performance Competencies.
