Undergraduate Student Assistant - Grant Year 3 - Retention Specialist

Overview

  • This position is open until filled with an initial application review to take place after July 19, 2024.
  • The pay rate for this position is $16.85 - $18.00 per hour.

FUNCTION OF THE UNIT

The overall plan of SDSU’s Building Bridges between Community and Careers (here on referred to Building Bridges) is a project whose aim is to position SDSU Imperial Valley (SDSU-IV) campus to be instrumental in addressing the community and regional workforce needs by facilitating pathways through San Diego State University (SDSU) to successful careers in Nursing, Public Health, and STEM education.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

This position will be assisting the Outreach Specialist and the Retention Specialist in various duties, activities, and events as needed.

Responsibilities

General duties – Peer Coach - under the supervision of Retention Specialist – 75%

  • Provide general SDSU Imperial Valley campus information to current students.
  • Provide guidance to students through tutoring, workshops, and mentoring.
  • Create and maintain your schedule for mentoring with your mentees.
  • Manage your appointments in a timely manner (this includes canceling and rescheduling)
  • Maintain records of tutoring sessions and records of mentoring sessions using the appropriate forms/software.
  • Share study skills or resources when necessary and adapt to the students’ learning method.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Prospective Student Events – 15%

  • Be able to conduct tours, present, or serve on student panels during campus visits as required.
  • Complete required hours as determined by the SDSU supervisors.
  • Remain on task at all times. Do not leave any event without approval from the Lead or Supervisors.
  • Be prepared at each outreach event including appropriate attire.
  • Be attentive at all responsibilities. No personal use of cell or university phones, use of personal or university computers for games and/or the internet in the office or at events.
  • Represent SDSU Imperial Valley at college and career fairs and other community events.

Office/Clerical - 10%

  • Accurately input and update data into computer systems or databases. Maintain records and files as needed.
  • Sort and file documents, records, and correspondence. Maintain a well-organized filing system for easy retrieval.
  • Professionally handle incoming calls, take messages, and direct calls to the appropriate person or department.
  • Manage and respond to emails promptly. Communicate effectively with prospective students, their families, staff and faculty.
  • Provide assistance and information to prospective students, their families, staff and faculty as required. Resolve basic inquiries or redirect to the appropriate department.
  • Handle sensitive information and documents with discretion and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all SDSU policies regarding COVID-19.
  • Ability to check SDSU student email on a daily basis.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of University admission policies and procedure.
  • Thorough written and oral communication skills, including English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to assist in working with students, staff, faculty, and parents.
  • Outstanding customer service skills and a high expectation for quality.
  • Well organized, ability to meet deadlines and detail oriented.
  • Possess good judgment and common sense.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at one time while exhibiting strong attention to detail.
  • Highly motivated individual who can foresee and complete projects with little supervision.
  • Establish and maintain professional, cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, community members, and student organizations.
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures and the ability to operate standard office equipment, including PC & iOS based office applications and platforms including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe reader, Google Suite.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate student at SDSU

Preferred Qualifications

  • Must maintain a 2.50 cumulative GPA
  • Must be in good judicial standing with the university.
  • Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills
  • Customer service experience
  • Bilingual speaking both English and Spanish
  • Students in Nursing, Math, Public Health encouraged to apply
