What You'll Do

YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish , one of the largest nonprofits in the region, focuses on the needs of women, girls, and families in the community, is searching for a Gender Based Violence Transitional Housing Advocate to join their team in the South King County, WA area.

YWCA offers transitional housing for women and children experiencing homelessness and gender-based violence. YWCA is dedicated to serving survivors of gender-based violence who are willing and interested in actively participating in goal planning and action steps for restoring long-term safety, stability, and independence.

The Gender Based Violence Transitional Housing Advocate is responsible for serving survivors through transitional housing, case management and facilitating needed wraparound programs for participant residents and their onsite families. As an DV Advocate you will also provide trauma informed advocacy to adult survivors which may include support with safety planning, life skills, employment, etc.

Note: This position is fully onsite at YWCA Offices.

Responsibilities

  • Transitional Housing
  • Engage in community networking activities to both increase access to services for survivors furthered away from opportunity specifically African American and survivors of color
  • Provide onsite support to 14 housing units including: coordinating unit transitions with the maintenance team and tracking vacancy rates.
  • Responds to referrals and calls within the required time frame.
  • Conducts intakes with new client, including screening for eligibility and to determine essential needs.
  • Facilitate and host monthly resident meetings and support groups.
  • Attends Domestic Violence Coordinated Housing Access Point (DVCHAP) monthly with other providers.
  • Directly addresses any resident violations of Program Guidelines in accordance with legal protocol and Program Director.
  • Adhere to Washington landlord tenant laws and regulations.
  • Case Management
  • Works together with participants to develop a self-sufficiency plan detailing goals in the areas of housing, education, employment, parenting, gender-based violence, mental health, chemical dependency, legal, and financial.
  • Develops individualized service plans and personal goal setting with residents to ensure participation threshold is maintained.
  • Participates in weekly check-ins to ensure residents meets all program enrollment requirements.
  • Wrap Around
  • Coordinate with the Child and Youth Advocate to support parents and children living on site.
  • Work alongside YWCA’s DV Rapid Re-Housing program to support survivors access to permanent housing.
  • Interacts with public health staff and health care access programs.
  • Ability to create program curriculum such as life skills, credit counseling and resume writing with an internal or external partner.
  • Co-facilitate life skills and parenting classes for participants with an external life skill coach.
  • Provide support to clients in navigating various institutions (i.e., King County Housing Authority, Child Protective Services liaison, Department Children Youth and Families, interactions with law enforcement, etc.).

Requirements

  • Minimum of at least 1 year of experience working with homelessness, domestic violence, commercial sexual exploitation, and/or human trafficking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism, homelessness, domestic violence, and social justice advocacy for those that are furthest from opportunities. (Specifically African American and other women of color).
  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance.
  • Experience with housing, apartment Management, or transitional housing is preferred
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and outlook, and cellphone text.
  • Knowledge of community resources within the great Seattle and South King County area.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must maintain 30 hours of continued education hours on advocacy based DV.
  • Candidate must be able to travel independently between multiple work sites within a day.

Hours, Rate, And Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $ 25.00
  • Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday, and sick leave plans
  • At the time of hire, employees may enroll voluntarily in the Fidelity 403b Plan
  • After two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund

Physical Requirements

  • Continuously sits for extended periods while performing desktop activities.
  • Continually stands and walks in performing duties.
  • Occasional weekend work maybe required.
  • Repetitively uses hands and wrists, fingering, handling, grasping, and reaching in using telephones, computers, kitchen equipment, donations, and supplies.
  • Frequently reaches and grasps in using telephones, computers, fax machines and other office equipment and supplies.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits, and climbs in performing duties in the office and in traveling to off-site meetings.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries up to 5lbs. of paperwork, files, and training materials, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries up to 50 Occasionally kneels, bends, pushes, and pulls in obtaining files in drawers.
  • *Continuously = Over 80% of the time * Frequently = 20-80% * Occasionally = Under 20%
