Tig Welder

NOTE: Not looking for a pipe or structural welder

Performs a wide range of routine to complex manual welds utilizing a variety of process methods and equipment on several different types of stainless steel and aluminum alloys in the fabrication or repair of assigned parts and products.

Applies basic and some advanced machine welding processes to join sheet metal aircraft components as specified by written instructions, weld schedules and sketches. Inspects completed work for conformance to specifications.

Functions And Responsibilities

  • Perform basic and some advanced machine welding tasks while applying standard practices.
  • Setup and regulate machine parameters such as gas, current, amperage, voltage, forge pressure and torch related items to produce correct bead size, penetration, nugget and other physical characteristics.
  • Check for required dimensions using pi tapes, calipers, micrometers, height gages or other inspection devices.

Skills, Education And Required Experience

  • One to five years related welding experience including TIG welding for stainless and aluminum fabrication. Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) experience with aerospace or precision fabrications. Completion of welding training program through vocational school or apprenticeship. Able to work with limited guidance in a team environment.
  • Must be AWS D17.1 and/or D17.2 certified within 6 months of employment. Ability to obtain AWS B2.2 and AWS C3.4 certifications within 6 months of employment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency welding GTAW of various alloys including A357, material thickness range .030 to .200 inches, pass NDT of all weld with radiographic and FPE. Proficiency in RSW desired.
  • Must successfully pass the EN-288 welding tests.
  • Ability to weld tanks and components from mechanical drawings, blueprints and written specifications.
  • Ability to interpret weld requirements from blueprints, WPS?s, RSWP?s and BPS?s.
  • Knowledge of wire and filler materials applications for various steel alloys, aluminum and some exotic materials.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read, write and understand instructions, procedures, drawings and blueprints.
  • Able to effectively apply lean initiatives.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effectively demonstrates team member competencies and participates in goal setting, performance feedback and self-development activities.

Working Conditions

Demonstrate proper and safe operation of equipment, and personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety glasses/full face shield, hearing protection, and gloves as required.

Physical Requirements

The machine operator performs physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and frequent movement of the whole body, such as climbing, lifting up to 50 pounds, balancing and handling of material.
