Job Summary: The Technical Theatre Director at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women has the responsibility of overseeing the technical operations of productions including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and props. This individual also coordinates the necessary maintenance and scheduling of Mercy’s performing arts spaces.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


The Technical Theatre Director (TTD) works with the Performing Arts Faculty and may do any or all of the following:


●     Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the theater including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities

●     In conjunction with the Performing Arts staff, the TTD determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented to the facility and staff in advance of production dates

●     Advises Mercy faculty and staff on the technical specifications and usage of technical equipment required for the individual productions

●     Supervises, assists, and troubleshoots with/for set and stage construction and management, therefore must have a knowledge of tools and equipment needed

●     Assists in recruiting, training, and assignment of stage crew for individual shows, including orienting them on safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations

●     Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and tools; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment

●     Consults with the Performing Arts Chairperson on the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies

●     Monitors Tech Week rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting of the show

●     Makes competitively priced recommendations to the Performing Arts Chairperson regarding capital purchases of technical equipment

●     Attends production strike at close of the run of the show

●     Works with school faculty and staff as well as potential outside organizations and Outside Rental Program Coordinator to schedule events for Performing Arts spaces

●     Arranges and supervises the rental of the theater

●     Creates a stage crew and engages support personnel (technical operators, crew, security) for Performing Arts Center rental events

Qualifications, Experience, and Education Required:


●       Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre from an accredited college or university required, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience

●       Strong background in technical theatre (educational theatre preferred) including experience with stage, rigging, lighting, and sound equipment

●       Proficiency in technical theatre software and equipment

●       Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in technical theatre

●       Experience working with students in an educational setting preferred


In addition to key responsibilities, the Technical Theatre Director will perform other duties as assigned.


Pay Range: $45,000 - $60,000 a year (pay information will vary depending upon relevant experience for the position)
