This position acts as staff specialist in providing technical guidance for complex or unique assignments to design and engineer Plumbing, Piping, HVAC and Fire Protection systems to assure safe reliable and energy efficient operation. The incumbent must be capable of applying diversified knowledge of design/mechanical engineering principles and practices, and independently making decisions on significant design engineering problems or methods.

Requirements

  • Normally requires a 4-year mechanical engineering degree and typically 9+years’ related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience).
  • Professional registration is required at this level.
  • Must be cognizant of the capabilities and limitations of various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse engineering assignments.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to walk job sites which would include the ability to clime stairs and navigate construction sites.
  • Up to 20% by both air and ground travel.

  • Develops specifications, working drawings, instructions, and other related documents of a complex project of large size or multiple projects.
  • Analyzes complex design problems requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures.
  • Participates in pre-award contract meetings for mechanical subcontractor contracts.
  • Consults with construction personnel concerning complex design constructability issues.
  • Serves as lead mechanical engineer on some projects. May also act as a project manager on projects that are primarily mechanical in nature. Coordinates the efforts of other professional disciplines for successful completion of the project.
  • Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget.
  • May plan, organize, and supervise design engineering activities for a project of significant size and complexity or two or more projects of moderate size and complexity.
  • May plan, schedule, coordinate, and oversee the work of lower-level engineers who assist with particular projects.

The hiring/salary range for this position in California is $129,000 - $195,000 per year. Please note that this is a just a suggested framework and salaries could fall outside of this. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience amongst other factors.
