Supervisor Specimen Processing

  • Organizes, directs and supervises functions and activities of the Specimen Processing areas.
  • Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance and makes recommendation for personnel actions.
  • Trains/orients staff in all areas of pre and post-analytical processes, procedures and related computer functions.
  • Maintains competency in all areas of responsibility, may be required to fill-in during breaks, short-staffing, excess workload and complex procedures.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with and efficient workflows with reference laboratory personnel.
  • Conducts monthly sectional meetings and submits minutes to the Laboratory Manager.
  • Reviews Reference Lab reports with appropriate follow-up and documentation and maintains as required.
  • Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and management of quality assurance and process improvement projects, as well the evaluation of data and recommendations.
  • Maintains assigned Procedure Manuals in compliance with CAP and NCCLS standards and review/revises the manuals as necessary and at least annually.
  • Participates in budget preparation and strives to operate section within allocated budget.
  • Makes recommendations for modification or changes for the maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Keeps current with equipment and supplies by vendor contracts to evaluate new products and equipment.
  • Submits monthly variance reports on time.
  • Interviews applicants and make recommendations for hiring.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with assigned staff, co-workers, physicians, other Hospital personnel, outside organizations or others who provide or receive Laboratory services.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the union contract.
  • Maintains close working with outside and Reference laboratories as required.
  • Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
  • Minimum of Associates Degree (A.S.) in science, Bachelor of Science preferred.
  • Three years of working in a clinical laboratory preferred.
  • ASCP or NCA Certification preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a clinical lab preferred.

Purpose of Position

Supervises and coordinates functions and activities of specimen processing. Provides support services to meet the needs of clients, performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices.

Schedule Details

Full time, Monday-Friday, occ. eves and nights, no weekends or holidays
