The Career Center student worker is responsible for providing reception to students, employees, or external visitors. Student workers may provide coverage, answer phone, greet, answer questions and assist visitors.

  • Assists students with reviewing, editing, and developing professional resumes, cover letters, and job applications (training is provided).
  • Assists students with mock interviewing skills (training is provide).
  • Provides career assessment and interpretation to undecided students through services offered by the Focus 2 Program (training is provided).
  • Helps clients develop and utilize career research techniques, such as conducting job searches and analyzing job trend outlooks.
  • Develops a general knowledge of Mid programs and their related professions including necessary education, training, career opportunities, and job expectations.
  • Assists the Career Center Director and TRIO SSS Director with in-class presentations providing information to students related to career/job search, resume/cover letter development, or interviewing techniques.
  • Assists the Career Center Director and TRIO SSS Director with posting open positions, planning events, updating materials and/or the Career Center website page.
  • Participates in Career Center team meetings to provide feedback and perspectives to the Career Center Director and TRIO SSS Director regarding current trends or preferences of the current student population regarding assistance in career related matters.
  • Provides Career Center coverage when the Career Center Director and TRIO SSS Director are not available or are assisting other students, employees, or external visitors by answering inquiries and questions by phone or in-person.
  • Provides information and make referrals where appropriate to student service departments, such as academic advising, tutoring, counseling, as well as available community services.
  • Recruits through campus activities and events to increase student awareness of Career Center services.
  • Performs copying, scanning, filing, and emailing documents.
  • Maintains confidentiality when handling student forms or related information.
  • Maintains the neat and welcoming appearance of Career Center Lab so that it is inviting to visitors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, customer service, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work with Career Center visitors to determine the assistance they are seeking.
  • Create and edit professional documents using computer software and college level writing skills.
  • Project a professional image at all times through appropriate conduct, dress, and communication.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, taking appropriate initiative on tasks that may not have been assigned, but are necessary.
  • Ability to work independently.


Education, Certification, Licensure

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Mid Michigan College Student.
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits.


Experience

  • Experience working in a customer service related field is preferred.
  • Some office clerical experience is preferred, including keyboarding, internet, and Google Suite.
  • Experience with creating promotional flyers is preferred.


Working Environment

  • The job responsibilities of this position are performed in an office building environment.
  • There may be occasional travel to other college locations for Career Center related events.
  • There may be occasional travel for conferences/training.
  • Duties are performed in an independent and team atmosphere. Continuous collaboration with team and supervisor will occur.
  • The job requires minimal physical exertion, such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (5- 25 pounds).
  • Minimal discomfort due to heat, dust and noise may occur.
  • Work schedule can vary based on needs.
