POSITION SUMMARY:

The Student Support Dean serves as a support to overall student success. This position is responsible for the leadership and delivery of all school wide behavioral programs. This position supports students through decision making, restorative practices, and conflict resolution. The Student Support Dean actively supports all school and District policies. The focus is on engaging, supporting and empowering students, in order to increase and improve communication and cultural understanding, resolve concerns student-student, student to school, and school to family, and increase protective factors for students. Build long-term, meaningful relationships with diverse families resulting in more parent involvement and student success. Build long-term, meaningful relationships with teachers and other building staff resulting in more student success.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Serves as an active member of the school leadership team.
  • Assists students in establishing high standards of conduct by supporting the school wide positive behavior intervention support system.
  • Coordinates with student supports including county, district and city resources.
  • Works in collaboration with attendance, administration and counseling departments.
  • In collaboration with school administration, investigates school/student related disciplinary incidents and follows through with appropriate consequences.
  • Oversees student management and supervision including during lunch and before and after school.
  • Provides leadership, direction and coaching to our attendance and security team.
  • Explains and interprets school and district policies.
  • Assists the administrative team with school wide behavior systems.
  • Provides feedback on school policies and practices.
  • Supports students with peer and teacher relationships, conflict resolution, goal setting, college career planning and coping strategies.
  • Engages and encourages student participation in both curricular and extra-curricular activities including athletics.
  • Works directly and in collaboration with the administrative team.
  • Lead and organizes the lunch and learn intervention.
  • Leads the building initiatives to provide alternatives to suspension.
  • Provides individual and group support in the areas of decision making.
  • Implements monitors, and evaluates enrichment programs, study groups and support groups for students
  • Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and the community in a positive and responsive way that is consistently welcoming and enhances effective work relationships.
  • Help students and their families understand and navigate the school system to achieve academic success.
  • Helps provide lay counseling in a variety of situations and conflicts that may arise due to cultural differences, and refer to professional staff when appropriate.
  • Facilitate student groups and encourage leadership- including leading our male leadership group.
  • Inform and educate the school staff on restorative justice practice and the relationship between equity issues and school consequences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

Required:

  • Strong belief in and support of all students having the ability and will to learn.
  • BA or BS in related field
  • Experience working with secondary students and diverse populations
  • Culturally proficient
  • Proven teamwork, confidentiality, and positive communication skills.
  • Knowledge of issues related to cultural integration and intercultural competency.
  • Demonstrates ability to establish guidelines of behavior and to enforce the consequences in a consistent manner, while assisting students in taking responsibility for their behavior.
  • Demonstrates ability to supervise large groups of students.
  • Models appropriate behavior, neat appearance, and proper grammar usage for all students. Helps provide a positive learning environment.
  • Prompt, regular and reliable attendance
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including cross cultural communication.
  • Knowledge of K-12 school system.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Available for flexible work schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and summer hours.
  • Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors and the community in a positive and responsive way that is consistently welcoming and enhances effective work relationships
  • Demonstrates an appreciation of diversity in all interactions and job functions.
  • Facilitates the development of pro-social behavior.
